Carbahn 774hp tune?
I just had a conversation with one of Carbahn guys (new Steve Dinan's company) and they already have a Stage 1 firmware that will bump up the h.p. from 617 to 774, and the torque goes up appropriately as well.
Have someone done it already? Any feedback? My slight concern is that the car seems to be perfectly balanced now and it might overpower it a bit... On the other side, +150 hp is +150 hp... BTW the cost is around $3K. Last edited by DRA; 01-28-2020 at 03:52 PM.. |

Bummer as the M850i is still listed under their development car program so guess I'll have to wait and see what comes from that.

Dinan was never known for the most aggresive tunes and sometimes a good thing. I wouldn’t put too much into the numbers they quote. Dinan has an interesting way for showing gains. I believe the tune includes a warranty also so I am sure nothing is being pushed. Our cars are underrated and doubt they will only show 617 crank on the dyno. More like 617 to the wheels which would equate to close to 700 crank. Then piggy back ya maybe 774 to the crank
I was told another company that wouldn’t confirm or deny the claim actually private labels their piggy back for Carbahn Quote:

I am running the race chip. No dyno but the race chip tuner stated you should be at 710 to the wheels.
All the power numbers don’t mean much as different dynos read much different. Need to get a draggy and see what my real world 0-60 and 1/4 miles times are |

Remember hp numbers don’t mean much. Two different dynos could show 100 hp differences. It’s measuring gains over stock which can only be shown on a dyno graph
In the past many companies were using race chips modules and just private labeling |

The Carbahn Tune is not a piggy but the previous Dinantronics was. Prior to that Dinan did all flash tunes. This seems to be a return to that where they spent long hours engineering the tune and they did a lot of the work on an engine dyne, not a chassis dyne which I agree has lots of variability even with the same dyno and different people running the machine.

I've used DMS Automotive for many years.
They're one of the UKs most highly recognised tuning companies, developing their own custom maps for various vehicles. One of the owners has an M5 running 770bhp, and it's rapid to say the least! My M850i will be with them in February, and I'll happily post the results after they've fettled with the car. M |

Scheduled my tune at Carbahn San Jose for tomorrow. By the way they have a red M8 Convertible there that is undergoing a more serious tweaking and should have 1000 hp in the end (not sure if that's bhp or wheel hp).
Will keep you guys updated. |

It's done.
I now have 774hp with 93 (a bit lower with 91... I'm in Cali so 93 is rare...); and ~800 with 96 (at the track). The acceleration was ridiculous before, now it feels like a Star Wars Hyperdrive. I also met Steve Dinan for the first time in person and opted in for a tuned Carbahn suspension installation with a good discount (TBD the next week). This will be the first M8 with this suspension, but it has already been tested with M5s that are largely the same suspension-wise. Going to track test the new power tomorrow at Laguna Seca. Will record some videos if I don't forget to charge the camera. Bonus: some photos below. The M8 convertible is getting new turbines and intake, expected bhp ~1000. Congrats! Glad you can feel the difference.
Getting a little more practical, though, and echoing what was said earlier--dyno numbers are useful only in context: 1. before and after the tune on the same car, same day 2. relative to other cars with trustworthy performance (same dyno) The only numbers other than the scenarios above that convey anything about a tune are actual performance numbers--which is, after all, what we're all going for. Get a Dragy and run some times. For reference, I have a JB4 on a 2020 M5 Comp. She runs a 1/4 mile in 10.33s and 0-60mph in 2.59s consistently. Stock, she made 592hp and 594ft Ibs of torque to the wheels. Tuned, she makes 715hp and 740ft Ibs to wheels. If you calculate crank numbers from those wheel numbers (to make it an apples-to-apples comparison to Dinan V2) using a very conservative 12% drivetrain loss, that yields around 810hp and 840ft Ibs of torque. These comparison numbers tell the story far more so than non-relative HP and torque gains. I'm certainly not trying to diminish your tune, rather, hoping you can obtain similar data so we can all learn and influence potential purchase decisions. Drop is one inch. As far as I understand, and I am not exactly a good car mechanic, there are custom coils and sway bars. It keeps the electronically adjustable parts. Steve mentioned that it should both equally comfortable in comfort mode and much more composed in sport+.
Independently from that I am installing front arms (BMW M genuine) that allow for negative camber adjustment. They'll also do the corner balancing for me. And I am also looking to upgrade to 285 front/295 rear. Or maybe with custom rims, 295/305 - but i love the comp rims. Re: the tune, wheel HP should have went from ~570 to ~650 according to the dyno data I've seen. I drive car real hard anywhere I go and I was able to feel the difference immediately. More testing at the track tomorrow! |

I wonder who is making their springs for them. Sure They aren’t. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe Eibach use to do their Dinan coils
Be interesting that they would have the first set of springs ok the market 1 inch drop would be pretty aggressive for Dinan. That would wombats all gap and would imagine some minor tucking. I know it’s not Dinan anymore but I am sure the philosophy hasn’t changed Quote:

Alright.
1:43 best lap time at Laguna Seca today. So shaved off 3 seconds out of the previous track day at Laguna. All tires are done, well done... fried them completely. Front and rear. Front brake pads (carbon ceramic) are done. This is the 3rd track day with the car. Tired and need a drink. Photos and videos coming tomorrow. |
