A test likely may not help you as much. The AC can fail either as early as taking off the lot (as some unfortunate owners have experienced) or anytime after. So it may work fine at first but fail later, or you may get lucky and have one that works all the time.

I believe there are a series of 'tests' (but nothing is 100% accurate) to see if your new vehicle has the same contaminants in the a/c system that cause the system failure. Check with your SA

So unless you're in a hot car, and don't use the AC button; you're not going to know if it works or not. I think it's such a unique product and problem, that you're going to have to test it in person. Although any BMW dealerships should be able to order the parts and fix it. |

I want to clarify that we seem to have 2 different AC issues at hand.
One appears to be a complete compressor failure with no AC working and the other is a randomly working one. Ours works like a few others have mentioned; when working the air comes out cold (AC) or normal to warm while operating (switching back/forth). This normalizes when set to 68 degrees or lower and then just blow cold. Stop the car for even a minute or two; the AC will not work whatsoever or it may. I was told that the evaporator is freezing up due to some software issue. While I believe it is software due to the random behavior I think it has nothing to do with the evaporator. Hard to believe it would freeze up in a minute to two... Likely this is all a software problem (probably some conditional logic which seems to be BMW's specialty). Our compressor was tested good... |

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’ll close the deal and handle it when it gets here. If it works great. If not I have a pretty good dealer that will take care of it. It’ll just be hard not to have it when it’s brand new. If I knew it could get fixed before I get my hands on it, it’d be easier to wait. |

My SA called me today, saying it might be hardware after all (like everyone else) instead of software.
Now they have a boatload of BMW models with the same issues, including another M8 cab with 270 miles on it. Will bring it in on Thursday where they will inspect the cooling fluid for metal shavings. Our cars AC does work from time to time... Either way, it appears that this will be another massive, costly campaign for them... At this point I am thinking of contacting corporate to start reimbursing me something for the forced non-use of the car. Record summer here; wife will not touch the car which she really likes. |

You shouldn't as so far all data points to the cars with a S63 engine vs the N63 which is in your 2020 GC and my Coupe. I've only had 2 BMWs in the garage and the AC on the 2020 M850i Coupe blows away the AC in my wife's 2017 X5. In fact during days like we're having this week in Phoenix (it hit 118 yesterday) I wouldn't even consider using the wife's X5 whatsoever.

Quick update on my M8s - I'm the OP
My "replacement" M8 after a new compressor and condenser, and considerable time in the shop, now blows cold enough to make ice. Problem, at least on this one, solved. I'm happy now with NO issues.
My "original" M8, which failed miserably in the first 30 days of ownership with multiple trips for service, new compressors, new condenser, new programming, and which BMW ultimately took back with very little argument, IS STILL AT THE DEALER MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT, months later... parked out side in the back... sad.. |

Does anyone experience visably fogged up A/C intermittently blowing into their car?
My A/C is working, drifts between A/C and regular air, but the foggy A/C is new to me. This car has more issues than a Hyundai Elantra (sad). |

Is the foggy A/C cold? It may be turning the AC on and off intermittently.

Huh, that is very weird. Sounds like another visit to the dealer is needed. Shame to hear your car is having so many issues.

Ours has been drifting in and out of AC as well hoping it was software but it turned out to be hardware. New compressor, evaporator and condenser needed but back ordered.
Thinking this will be a late August repair, just in time when you need it less... |

Replacement of the evaporator is a hassle, from what I'm told, it requires a great deal of interior and dash disassembly..

Does anyone have (or if waiting for the fix pls ask your SA) the production dates or serial number run for affected vehicles?
Evaporator replacement is a big deal and located behind the passenger side of the dash in most cases, hoping it will not be part of the fix.
