Removing 5k Rev limiter

Hey guys I just got a M8 competition and realized it has a rev limiter at 5,000 RPM. Kind of disappointing because I came from a 2019 M5 competition, and it sounded better 😭. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove this (and not make it obvious to prevent my warranty from being cancelled)

Can you be more specific about the scenarios where the rev limiter ceiling hits? Do you mean in neutral revving it for shits and giggles?

Yeah just when I put it in to neutral or in park. Not when I’m driving then it’s fine. So yeah mostly just for shits giggles 😂

Got it. Love 'em myself, too. No idea if the limiter is new or not.

No help here.

that's not good to rev with no load on the engine.
Trust BMW engineers know what's good for your engine.

also, is your engine cold?

No it’s not cold. They implemented it because of EU noise regulations that happened in 2020. I think almost all the M cars got it. Not sure why they did it to the US spec when it’s just a software thing and not a physical limitation. I was hoping there was a way to program it out. Doubt BimmerCode would work, probably need a tune or something.

By design. Page 302 of the cars manual:
“ With a displacement of 4.4 liters, the V8 high- performance engine generates a maximum power of 600 hp, with Competition Pack-
age 617 hp, and a maximum torque of 553 lb ft/750 Nm. With its spontaneous re- sponse characteristics, a speed range of wide utility results. The maximum RPM is 7,200 rpm and is electronically controlled. Because of the high engine dynamics, the maximum RPM with the vehicle stationary is reduced.”

The thing is my 2019 M5 competition had the same exact engine, yet they didn’t limit the rev’s on that. I don’t think it’s a limitation for the engine, everywhere I’ve read online is that it’s a software limitation they put for noise reduction.

Why would you want to do that? Sorry, I don’t get it.

Like he said "for shits and giggles"

He shits his pants and the repair shop giggles when he throws a rod in the $30K engine!

Wasn’t expecting such a strong negative response for wanting to hear my exhaust in a BMW forum 😅. I mean if a paid mid-6 figures for a car, I like to be able to hear its full potential. It’s not like I’m red lining it at every light. Don’t see the need for all the negative responses when all I did was ask for a solution.

Yes, and same limitation on my 2020 M850i. Guessing that's the year that it hit or an OTA did it. Either way in park it only hits 5K.

I believe the rev limiter is automatically disabled if you hang out in a McDonald’s car park on a Saturday night.

There’s no strong negative response from anyone. If you truly believe there’s something amiss or you know better than the BMW engineers, then go for it.

The reason there is a limiter typically falls to emissions. The engine under load or no load still can spin the same speeds and movements without any damage or harm hence why we redline on a limiter to protect the engine. For no load however on new engines that are electronically controlled crank pressures at high RPM released pressure that is built up based on A/F ratio. So when at a non load or non moving situation the pressure gets released causing the piston rings to not expand fully allowing for oil to get by and get burned. To avoid this many automakers simply limit the engine speed in no load situation. But you won't damage mechanically the engine by revving it to its built in protection limit that already exist. The mechanics of the engine do not change based on speed of car. However used to see many issues with over reving when one removes limiter totally or takes it up too far, that would be reving it with no load and the internals don't get resistance and actual over rev..... that is another situation though.

I’ve been hearing cranky old farts talk about how revving your engine is “bad for the engine” forever, the reality is that as long as the engine is warmed up, it’s not a big deal. Should you do it all day every day? No, but here and there a rev to redline shouldn’t do any harm

This post talks more about the EU regulations I was talking about.
