When it rains, it pours...

Tomorrow my friend and I were going to take pictures of my M850i for autotrader so I could try and sell it and get out from under the hefty payments.

Now I'm fooked. Some lady backed into my car in a parking lot and put a nice big hole in the bumper with her receiver hitch. I had already pulled out of my spot when I saw here starting to back out. I layed on the horn (5+ seconds) to no avail. She had zero damage on her rusted Ford Escape. My car needs a new bumper and the quarter panel fixed.

So... I can't sell the car because it's damaged. It will also now have a claim on it. Nobody will want to touch it as such. No fault insurance here means there's nothing else I can do except get the car fixed.

I just noticed her vehicle is missing the rear wiper blade. She was backing up blind!

Wow, that sucks. I really feel for you. What did she have to say for herself?

So sorry to see this-dumb b——, I hope she was exceedingly apologetic and has great insurance. Could she even see through that mud covered glass with the odd wipe job

Make sure you get diminished value properly calculated......

It seems that type of claim doesn't really exist here in Canada. I can ask for it, but if (probably) refused then I have to sue with no guarantee of winning.

Didn't even know such a claim existed until others on the forum shared their experience. Hope it all works out and her insurance pays to fully restore the M850i to pristine saleable condition. It's not huge damage but from what I understand is these days in the digital world of Carfax, etc. people will argue the value given the car having been in an accident. That is where the diminished value comes into play, i.e., pay for the repairs plus potential lost value due to an accident in a Carfax report.

I have known countless people including myself who have suffered an accident and similarly discussed diminished value. I've never met anyone who actually obtained reimbursement for it.

Lawyers work for 300 and up per hour.
Doubt suing would be economically feasible.

Edit. I'm in IL

I had incident with one of our previous cars and I never heard about DV before that.
GEICO, our insurance co at that time, contacted me and offered xxxx DV without asking in addition to full repair (it was hit and run accident so it was all my insurance).
I took offered DV, repaired car and traded in later.
May be some states have different DV rules?

I think for something like a bumper replacement it shouldn't matter really. It doesn't to me as long as it is repaired properly. There's obviously no serious damage and thankfully the wheel was not hit.

I'll start tomorrow trying to get it appraised and go from there. This could take a very long time...... I hope not though!

Which is why you need to make sure it's fixed at a BMW certified collision center.....

Accidents don't show up on the Carfax for 30 days. You could also not go through insurance as well 🤷*♂️

I've gone this route on some of the Mrs. parking lot incidents (all her fault - and she typically hits poles rather than cars), my intention wasn't really to hide it because it was a lease, but just to not have the claim, and of course they didn't ever show up.

Looks like you and Vic55 have similar stances when taking pictures of your car

From what I learned today, it's probably going to take at least 4 months before I can get the car fixed. The shops are all booked up into next year.

Taking my wife's X3 in to the body shop tomorrow for an aggressive door ding that happened in July. So shops are backed up everywhere.

Did they replace the bumper? I heard that because of the sensors the bumpers can't be re-painted, but have to be replaced? Are you happy with the work?

Small update: I get my damage appraisal this thursday.

Small update #2: BMW finally approved replacing the dash, or at least part of it. The passenger side top has a 'spot' that cannot be cleaned and there's a lot of black color coming off when trying to clean it.

Oil change needed this month. Also going to have them check a chassis function reduced error I had a few weeks ago.

Do they have to replace the entire dash for this? If so, are you sure it's worth all the possible collateral damage of a not so perfect install, plus new squeaks rattles etc?
