Chopping the M850i for a Panamera Turbo S-E
Hi all,
I'm looking at getting rid of my M850i coupe, and switching to a Panamera Sport Turismo Turbo S-E Hybrid Sport Turismo. Aside from the exceptionally long name, and the lack of Android Auto support, I can't see a massive difference between the two (other than the obvious of some extra doors). Before someone suggests the M850i Gran Coupe, I don't like the shape, so have ruled that out. With Covid having closed the car dealerships in the UK, I can't test-drive the Porsche. Has anyone driven the two back to back, or in depth and can compare? I've watched plenty of Youtube reviews, but would like the perspective of a fellow 8 series owner. Thanks M |

The new one that is just going into production now is superior to previous model years
You can get a standard turbo s non hybrid has 620hp and the turbo S E hybrid HP went way up as well

I was in Porsche dealerships for a few hours for servicing and got a chance to look around.
IMO the Panamera just looks a swollen bloated 911 (which in a way it is). And that includes the new one which i saw on YT. The Taycan looks so much more aggressive. Moving forward, as EV starts becoming mainstream I wonder if Porsche would just get rid of the Panamera and evolve the Taycan. |

it's front engine, and rear wheel drive. it's the opposite of any 911, and it drives nothing like a 911. it's more like a sedan or regular car. it had a redesign in 2016 for the 2017 models. so it's half way through the current generation and likely a new cycle is coming in 2023/2024. the hybrid is new for 2018/2019, but the Taycan will replace it. it's not very sporty compared to a 911; but is more sporty than a bmw 540 or 550. but not close to a m5 or m8. |

here we have bimmercoded, ecu tunes, piggyback, chips, exterior and interior mods. For Porsche (anything besides a 911) in the USA for Panamera there is virtually nothing. Also PORSCHE dealerships around my area in DC wouldn't budge off MSRP and wanted over sticker. with BMW, I was able to find 5 dealership equal distance from my house that helped drop the prices under invoice. I'd wager if I had more time or looked at more dealership, I could have gotten even better prices. There is two local Ferrari dealerships that offered me good deals. while I didn't get the GTC Luso, it was an option for family car. |

Panamera's (last gen) are hyper discounted as the price point just doesnt meet the demand nor does the Taycan for that matter. But the driveability of the car is impressive (its not as fast as our M cars in a straight line) but those few ticks are offset by brilliant Porsche engineering. It handles excellent for the extra heft it carries. The latest GTS iterations and above sound and drive great. Ive driven all the versions extensively and while I have not indulged- I would not have regret either. The steering and chassis feel are on point. The car drives like a 911 four door and it should based on the nameplate. The newest not released Turbo S ran a 7:29 at the Ring.
https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2020...ern-21764.html UK pricing is obviously different but anyone on this side can get used Panny Turbo S for cheap in comparison to the starting msrp. The next gen is just that, the newest Panamera (coming soon in 2021). If the price points come back to earth, the car will be a great buy.

One time--- I dont have enough seat time to truly say much honestly. Stupid fast off the line (Turbo S) and it looks like a bad mother fucker. The handling and steering are excellent like the Pannys. But with no exhaust to match the pull- It still has me wondering if I would grow weary of it down the road. Performance is not everything to me- I need the dynamics of a gas engine with roar .... still.

Well said.
The Porsche dealership in my town has 6 (that I can count). Sitting outside getting water sprayed everytime I drive my x6m thru the puddle in front of them. Really thinking of getting g one but still not sure if I can handle a non exhaust car. I've never owned a Porsche so this would be my first one and not sure if this is the true experience I've been longing for.

While I haven't compared the m850 gran coupe to the Panamera; they are head to head competition. Like the Honda Civic to the Toyota Corolla. |

Thanks for the feedback all.
In terms of mods, the only thing I can do in the UK is a remap (from 690bhp to 800bhp). Would I do it? Maybe, but not sure it's necessary. My M850i went from 530bhp to 729bhp, so that was a massive boost. There are no discounts on new models in the UK, but there are versions with ultra low mileage which are heavily reduced. The one I'm looking at is from 2020, with 1,000 miles on - list was £158k and the dealer will take £102k. It's missing one spec item I want (360 cameras), but I'm looking into whether they can be retrofitted. Sales of the Panamera dropped 81% from 2019 to 2020. While most of that can be attributed to the Taycan, it does open up an opportunity for idiots in the UK like me who want to daily a massive V8 round Central London! There aren't many Turbo S-Es on sale, let alone the Sport Turismo version, but it does look like the dealers want to clear their inventory. I also looked at the GTC4Lusso, but like most Ferraris it holds its value too well, so that was much more expensive than I could afford - although it probably won't depreciate that much, so its a better investment. So just to update this, my M850i has gone!
I really loved the car, but due to Covid I found myself not using it for the intended purpose of long drives into Europe. I had a Panamera Sport Turismo Turbo S-E Hybrid on a week long loan from my local dealer (really kind of them). The car was an absolute monster, but ultimately it didn't do a huge amount more than my M850i and I felt it would have been a sideways move. So, in the interests of going sideways, I've bought myself a brand new Mclaren - no 4 wheel drive, so lots of rear-wheel spin to come! Thanks to everyone here for all of your help and advice over the past 16 months! M |

I had the pleasure of driving a 2018 Turismo 4S Hybrid last month in Colorado for a few days and it was a real treat.
The infotainment is hard to get used to coming from 10 years of iDrive, especially the Nav, but Apple Carplay somewhat solves that. The ride and handling however (like mentioned above) is light years better than the M850, even with the 4 wheel steering. It's literally like driving a stretched 911, so kudos to the engineers for the miracles they pulled off. I was up in the mountains defying the laws of physics with a curb weight like that. Here's a couple GoPro videos I shot if anyone's interested. Also, disregard the guy who said the Taycan & Panny are exactly the same minus the engine. Different weight, length, height, wheelbase, center of gravity... basically every possible thing that could be different besides the badge on the hood. A truly ludicrous and misleading statement, that surprisingly no one corrected.

Sure the car was super quick and the new Plaid offering just ramps that up. The best I can describe it is that all EV equates to "no soul". Granted my ultimate choice of the M850i has the "soul" I was looking for but it paled in comparison to the NA V8 in the LC500 which was absolutely glorious. However, just like ALPINA_DREAMS called out the Infotainment in the Turismo he had for a weekend the LC500 has the same drawback and ultimately for a sole daily driver purchase I couldn't get past that whatsoever. |
