Car seats in convertible / coupe

Currently, I have a 2019 7 series and a qx60

The Infiniti is due first, and we were thinking of replacing it with something large like a Yukon Denali/escalade/qx80

Figured when the bmw was due for replacement, we would want something different from a truck. With a year old and a 4 year old, another 7 or even x7/x5 would be the wiser choice. But 850 coupes/verts look slick and tempting. Though a GC is more practical, deals are harder to come by for the GC.

I was curious to see if I should keep an eye out for coupes/verts given our family needs. Is this even possible? lol. Thanks for the replies guys

Yes, I've been doing it for 2+ years in my 2019 BMW m850i with no problems. We had some motion sickness / speed issues that have been resolved with Zofran. But my kid loves to get in and out of the back seats.

I've had 4 people my size in the car with no problems. it's certainly tight, but you can get a 6'1" large man; a 6'2" thin man; a 5'8" mid sized woman; and a 2 year old baby carseat kid in the convertible with 0 problems.

with the top down in the summer for a short trip. (we live in DC, everything is less than 10 miles away).

I won't recommend more than 2 people in the coupe or convertible for long periods of time; but it's do able. For us, the sports cars are a bit rough for potholes and the bad roads around us.

We often take the larger SUVs with more than 1 or 2 people. if I was buying a new car for a family of 4; I might look at the Gran Coupe, but personally I'd stick with the x5 or x7.

we currently have 5 in the garage, 2 "sports cars", and 2 mid size SUVs, and the larger family hauler the Infiniti QX80 Limited Edition.

the Infiniti is by far the winner for long trips where we can plug into 2 lighters, 3 regular laptops plugs; charge 6 USB different iPhone, iPad, and andriod phones while watching the 2 separate DVD screens and still have 3 separate rows with room for 7 adults to sleep and spread out.

if you're looking to replace something in 5 years; with a then 5 and 9 year old; you'll want something else besides the coupe or convertible.

I'd suggest an x7 to replace the qx60 and an x5 to replace the 7 series. if you want to stick with BMW.

My 8 y/o is just fine in the back of the coupe behind me, but I sit fairly close and upright. She claims she is more comfortable than she was in the M3 and is only annoyed that she lost her seat warmer, but she feels like she gained a foot warmer since her feet are closer to the rear vent under my seat.

I figure I have about 2-3 years until she'll grow out of it (our 13 and 14 y/o girls do not fit, but they're also taller than most women I know, so YMMV there). I had two petite adult women in the back last weekend, they didn't complain, but it was also only about a 15 minute ride. They were definitely a bit hunched over making sure their heads didn't hit the roof.

Yep, definitely more head room in a convertible! About 2" with top up. And of course 1000" with top down!

Agreed. I’ve had both the M850 coupe and the convertible. The backseat in the ‘vert seems roomier than you would think, given the mere two extra inches. The roof angle plus the independently operated rear quarter windows provide the reality or at least the illusion of greater space.

I can get two 8-year-olds or one 12-year-old back there without complaint. Aside from the lack of cup holders. That, they rightly complain about.

Hi mpop302,

I have a four year old and an 18 month old stowed regularly in the back and it works quite fine. The only issues is in tight parking spaces, when you can't open the doors wide enough to wrangle the car seat belts. The kids are always asking for "Roof Off, Dad!"

Hi All- I'm thinking of purchasing an M8 coupe from an out-of-state dealer. Unfortunately there's not one local to me that I can look at.

Can someone confirm that they've fit rear-facing car seats in the back of an M8 coupe. It looks like Resjudicata may have made that work, but the picture he attached is no longer available.

I don't expect I'd have the seats in the car that often, but I'd love to know if they fit. Thanks!

Hey there. I am thinking of a M850i convertible. I have two kids under the age of 6. Is it possible to put two car seats side by side and also have the passenger seat occupied by a 5ft person?

I am 6’1” and the rear seat behind me in the convertible loaner i had was unusable. My good lady is 5’6” and the rear seat behind her was certainly not usable by an adult.

For regular rear seat passengers the GC in my opinion is the only way to go. I can’t understand why such a big car as the GC hasn’t got even more room in the back - my 328GT had around twice as much legroom AND reclining seat back.
