A $400,000 Toyota. WTF?

Toyota is going produce 500 LF-As at $400k a piece.
That's absurd. I was always under the impression that Toyota's LF-A was a serious attempt in competing with 911s and GT-Rs. But no. They made a freakin boutique car. Who the hell would plop $400k down for a car that has similiar performance numbers as a $85k Nissan? Ands its almost twice as much as the upcoming 458 Italia. <cough>

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...ive/index.html

They obviously didn't pay attention to the sales numbers on Mercedes McLarens.

There was a time when I was excited about the car. That was when I thought it was going to be in the 997 Turbo price range.

For 400k I will take a Superleggera, a GT3, and a nice truck and enclosed trailer for taking them to the track.

They call it a "Halo" car. It looks uglier than a Viper and costs much more, the only halo this will provide is one of idiocy.

Sad because i really liked the first of Toyota's supercars, the 2000GT.

I agree with you on the Mercedes SLR, it did have a mass market badge with a truly impossible price but that car managed to be great on the strength of the Mclaren brand, it was even built in the same small building as the F1 cars. I doubt this will even be anywhere as desirable as that.

Who _is_ it meant for, though? I know people who could afford that car, and I can guarantee you none of them would buy it in a million years. The LFA has the styling of the GTR, the performance of the R8 V10, and the price of a Carrera GT. That's terrible.

I remember reading that the average age of a Lexus buyer was about 60. Doubt most of them will be interested.

Does ppl who can fork over 400k for a car actually care? To them 400k is like $4 to us. Would you even think about buying a $4 matchbox? There exist ppl who will just pay 1st and ask questions later. I bet the salesman with a couple of mega yacht owning friends could unload of few. Also I think the whole point of this car is that no one will ever get one. So, when your 400k is going to guarantee that you drives the only one in town.

I think the whole point of this is for Lexus to tell you that their F line CAN make a 400k car so that you'll be happy paying 60k for the IS-F.

"sir...here's your new car..."
"eh? when did i bought one??? meh..oh well..thanks!"

They are obviously making this car to help build their brand, not compete directly with the competition.

Remember, though, the LFA is first and foremost a corporate halo, a rolling Super Bowl ad intended to ignite passion and fire in a nonsupercar brand. Who really cares if the LFA itself loses a few deca-millions in the process? What matters is that the 500 cars do their part and set the hearts and pocketbooks of would-be Lexus buyers ablaze. (Incidentally, Toyota admits that LFA purchasers will be largely hand-selected for maximum visibility and marketing value.)

Very smart. I dont think many people get it. I say quit crying! It WASNT made for you. Dont get upset. It wasnt made for me either.

They are "only" selling about 500 of them. Does any remember those ridiculous 100k Neiman Marcus 6 series, jags, etc. that sell out in a day.

People forget that Toyota will lose money on every one of these they sell.
