Help me rationalize buying an M850i Convertible please
A dealer not too far from me has a leftover 2019 M850i convertible with no options, about a 123 MSRP, that I can have for $93,500 plus tax, etc. I'd likely lease it, since the depreciation on these things is massive, which would put me at around $1000 a month. Which is a lot of money, but not a bad deal for a car of this caliber. I'm trying to beat them down even more, but it's unlikely.
Problem is, I already have a perfectly good car (2019 540i) which is worth so little that there's no point in trading it in (it's a lease). And the wife likes the 850i but not enough to let it come out of her car budget. So I'll be paying for it. It will be a spare toy, for nice days, weekend drives, etc. It's a great car - I borrowed one for a weekend, and really the only thing I didn't care for was the brakes, when coming to a stop, it's a little hard to make it smooth. I grew up with convertibles, and haven't had one for several years now. So those of you who have, or had, the 8 convertible, help me out. Is it worth it, or should I just move on and buy something more affordable? And yes, life is short. That's kind of my motto, especially now with this virus thing going around.

If you truly can afford an 850 'vert as "a spare toy," go for it. Seriously, just go for it. Because, yes, life is short.
It's a spectacular machine, in every way. (Not sure what you felt with those brakes, but that hasn't been my experience and I haven't seen any other posts along those lines). I traded a perfectly good, nearly new car for it (risking death or, worse, my wife's ire) and I regret nothing. Neither does she, now. As I've mentioned previously, I wake up every morning thinking if there's some place I need to drive to. These days, the answer more often than not is, "No, not really," but that doesn't matter. I love the car and I love having the car. You will, too. P.S. Can you share the specs? Colors, etc? Are you sure it doesn't have any options? Nearly all of them are specced with some extras.

I have a M850i ($135k MSRP) and it's a great car.
So great that now I want a M8 🤣 If you are interested to take over the lease here are the details: https://www.swapalease.com/lease/det...?salid=1460191 |

That's a great discount (24%), but just make sure it fully translates into the lease i.e. cap cost, buy-in money factor rate, mileage comp no additional fees, etc etc.
Going from a 5 series sedan to a drop top GT with a monster engine and so much more exclusivity will be forever rewarding.

Given that you borrowed it for the weekend you already know that the M850i is a night and day driving experience vs the 540i. If you can swing the "toy" for a lease I say go for it. You can always try to renegotiate with the wife after the fact to have her chip in as well given she too will be enjoying the "toy".

it's our "spare toy". it's a garage queen, but she's fun. The options make a big difference in my opinion, but it's up to your taste.

I love my M8C convertible. Dropping the top has done wonders for my mood on sunny days during the lock down AND you can hear the engine better. Mine is not my DD either.
It also gets more looks than my 911 turbo if you care about that. I don't but it is noticeable. |

between the 540 and m850i cv, you can use either as a daily. honestly you probably won't notice that much difference in the soft top in most weather outside of snow or heavy rains. light rain or any other dry day should be fine. The top is quiet and top is solid.
For me personally, I'd probably swap the 540 for the m850i and get an SUV for daily. But I have kids and need the space. (also we have 3 SUVs and the m850i. ) . |

"Help me rationalize buying an M850i Convertible please"
I think it's hard to rationalize any BMW purchase. There are many cars that are will get you where you need to go in reasonable style, comfort, and quality for way less in costs. IMHO - BMW's not about being rational - it's about the way it makes you feel when you look at it, sit in it AND drive it. I left the brand a year and half ago for MB and regretted it every day, until coming home with an 850 GC last month. Sometimes, I just go sit in the garage even when when i have nowhere to go under the current circumstances. The deal your getting seems pretty darn good! If it feels right- go for it. Put it in sport plus with the top down and listen to the exhaust as the car needlessly burns up crude oil to make those amazing pops and gurgles. It will feel great! Damn the rationale. |

Alternatively, you could wait 2-3 months and custom order a 2021 m850i convertible fully loaded with all the options.
And in 6 months or so, once it arrives, trade in your 2019 for a 2021 depending how much time is left on your lease. I'd bet you'd still get a good deal with loyalty bonuses for your next lease if you did the convertible for your "next" car. instead of a current toy. The only downside is you'd have to be patient and wait. You'd miss the summer season, but with Covid around - you're probably not going to miss much. assuming "second waves" of open and closings. |

Or you can buy a 2019 convertible with a couple thousand miles loaded for ~$80K out the door....
Still same warranty and another $15K in your pocket |

But he is not buying. He wants to lease. But I am
Not sure you can even lease a 2019 this late into 20 anymore. I remember April being the cutoff |

LuvMyE92 is looking at is 93 plus fees, so probably closer to $99k all in. For $100k, heck I'd probably sell mine. It's probably not worth it for a 2019 when 2021 models are now on order. That's almost a full lease cycle behind. Even at BMW residuals, MSRP of 130-140 is only worth around mid $80s. |

Do you really want to commit to a car that doesn't have the options you want? That would be a deal breaker for me.
The 8-Series convertible never sold well to begin with, so it's not tremendously difficult to get a screaming deal. Check a few of the larger metropolitan dealerships who will normally have Executive Demo cars that were used by upper Management. They technically lease as new cars, since they were never titled. I picked up a loaded 2019 750i for almost $26K off sticker. All warranties and maintenance packages included.
