BMW 840D vs M340i

Hi guys, im new to the forum and from the UK. I am interested in getting rid of my soulless 6 month old Audi S3 for an ultimate driving machine!. I'm currently paying £400 per month on my Audi and set a budget of around £600 per month for a BMW that i will be using mostly to commute to work. I want a fast comfortable AWD DD that can be fun when i want it to be - the ultimate all rounder!. I have driven an 840D which i found extremely luxurious and exactly what i was looking for however i have come across the M340i which might tick all my boxes too.

With the current pandemic i'm choosing to hold off for now to get the best deal and test drive an M340i but if anyone with experience driving both cars could shed any light on this unusual comparison of cars i would be extremely grateful! This might help guide my search!

Thanks in advance

I struggle to even compare them. I've had an M340i as a loaner and it was nice and quite quick. In terms of interior tech, it's inferior to the 8-series. In terms of how it makes you feel driving it, there's no comparison--if pricing isn't the differentiating factor, then the 8 is in a different league.

The M340i is an impressive car. I was given one as a loaner between by trade in and pick up of my M8. The M340i was a lot of fun to drive.

However, its hard to compare to a 8 series. You'll have to see which one calls out to you more.

I've recently taken delivery of an 840d coupe and its pretty special, inside and out. I think if you sat in them both you'd prefer the 8 although the M340 would be quicker unless you had the 8 remapped. The boys at DMS automotive offer 400+ bhp & 740 NM torque, with AWD its rapid but will return over 500 miles out of a tank.

I haven't driven the M340 but if you needed back seats and you're worried about what a car is going to be worth after 5 years then you'd have to nod the M340. If you want the best all rounder have a remapped 8, you wouldn't be disappointed but then i doubt you would with a M340i.

Just my two pence worth.

I'm with limeypride. Given other forum notes on UK deals on the 8, try and get yourself into m850i/m8!!

A very salient couple of points. If you need back seats the 8 series Coupe is definitely a no go. If you are concerned about depreciation the 8 series is once again a no go. That said the 8 series is luxurious, quick and has the tech you cannot get in a M340i.

Totally agree and a great deal on a M850i will leave you with a permanent smile on your face as the car is flat out amazing for a DD with seemingly endless power for that need. Plus, I believe one difference on the M Performance M850i vs the rest is it comes with a carbon core that is not part of the others, e.g., M340i, M550i, etc.

... and if rear seats are needed, opt for the GC.

Never test drove or looked at the m340i but we did test drive an m550i. To be honest I wasn't really impressed with it and neither was my wife. Right after we test drove the m550i we started to look at the m850i and needless to say it was a night and day difference and we never looked at that m550i again even though the dealer was offering a killer deal on it.

Being that the m550i and the m850i were such a big difference, I could only imagine comparing a m340i to the m850i.

I'm running an M850i with the newest DMS tune, so putting out 729bhp.

It's wild, very comfortable, but the ultimate toy!

When I bought mine (second hand), I was amazed that BMW Used were offering 4.9% APR on a used car. That meant I could pick one up for around £600 per month with an £8k deposit.

Looking now though, they're offering 2.9% on a USED CAR! That figure is lower than you see on most new cars; an M5 Competition is 9.9% APR on the same website for example.

So, to the OP, dependent on your deposit on an M850i, you could easily pick one up for less than £600 per month - just bear in mind you wont get the same fuel economy as you do from an 840i.

I had a new Z4 M40i before I got my 840d. I miss the engine from the Z4 slightly which is the same unit as the M340i, but apart from that the 840d is the better car in every way possible! It is significantly more comfortable and grown up to drive. The standard equipment is very generous too with lots of bits I didn't have before like the HK speakers, Head up display and Comfort Access.

Try them both and see what you think but unless you're desperate for the slightly better performance/ soundtrack the 8-series is better IMO.

Oh and on the fuel economy I'm seeing about 35mpg long term from the 840d whereas the Z4 sat at 28mpg so a slight improvement there

Wow. I get 12mpg on the 'drive it like you stole it' cycle—but 12 (s)miles per gallon is a reasonable return I think.

Yes and of course crude oil now mid $20's per barrel - so fuel costs as a potential reason to not buy an 850/M8 has evaporated (boom boom)

That hilarious.. to fill my tank up with the good stuff costs me £80-£90 ($100+) for which I get 35-40 mpg driving however I want. I may fill up twice a week so can you imagine the cost if I had the M850 with 17mpg!! That'd be the equivalent of nearly $800- $1000 a month.. in fuel.

The 8 felt very comfortable and luxurious on my test drive. I just wonder that the size of it may impact on the fun factor leaving me feeling bored driving it after a few months. Are you finding it fun to drive?

Fun. Where to start with that? Why I don't I go first on my favorite fun thing to do with my 8 series and other forum members can chip in.

Not far from my house along "main street" is a strip of cafes serving coffee and breakfast on weekends to people mostly sitting on outside tables. My favorite fun thing to do is put the 8 into sport plus mode and accelerate towards the cafes and then take my foot off the accelerator to release a series of loud cackles and pops to all. Do a 180 around the roundabout. Repeat.

It's a car that takes a little getting use to, especially with the four wheel steering and how it turns in and the sheer girth of the steering wheel. Still catches me out.

It's a lot of fun when you want it to be, I'm a month in and I get excited every time I see it and drive it.

LOL and totally agree. I drive my commute (well back when I did a commute ) in DILYS as well but with Sport Individual having the engine and transmission modes in Sport. In that configuration I'm getting about 16 (s)miles per gallon and I'm sure if I did it with Sport Plus for those settings 14 or less.

In fact I'm now vowing to configure the car for tomorrow's get out of the house with the Sport Plus settings in Individual (want to keep the chassis/suspension on Comfort vs a full Sport Plus configuration) just to start tracking. Will keep it that way as well for when the stay-at-home order in AZ is lifted for a least a couple of weeks of commute to compare the (s)miles per gallon difference.

LOL and I pretty much do the same but can elicit seemingly burbles on demand in Sport Individual with the engine and transmission set to Sport. However, there are times of low speeds in which I purposely set to Sport Plus just for further shits and giggles for the bystanders, e.g., when pulling into my office parking lot in the morning as without it the speed bumps hinder my spirit.

I didn't think I'd fine anyone else who did the same jump I just did...

I also had a z4 m40i (and loved it for a whole 8 months)...but I now need more space to travel in Europe and I just swapped it with a 840D convertible!

The engine swap (revs and sound..) hurts a little bit...but the 8 series is on another league!

My mpgs were very different though....on 2500 miles I did a 19mpg on the Z4 (mostly driving in London though..). I still have to drive the 840d for a bit to check that out
