Tesla

This is not really a comparison... but my buddy and former CEO of software company we built and got acquired a few months back.... just took delivery of his checked-every-box P85D Tesla.

We took it to lunch today. I knew it would be fast. I didnt think it would be THAT fast. Holy face melting acceleration Batman. The acceleration is seriously insane. It is like having your own on demand roller coaster under you. Every time he hit it I am pretty sure we giggled like little girls.

I have an M3 on order which I think overall I will like much, much better (and for close to 50k less) but that Tesla takeoff is absurd.

Quick, yes. But zero visceral feel after that. Would never own one and if I was given one, I'd sell it immediately.

If I had gobs of money I'd buy one just for the fun of the straight line acceleration, not as a primary vehicle but one of my fleet. The screen and technology inside are very nice as well.

I seriously doubt most Model S buyers are buying thinking about saving the environment. I'd say it is muc more about technology, trendiness and status.

Nope though it does make a distinct whirring sound. At the moment my brain was planted to the back of my skull I wasnt thinking about the lost exhaust/engine note.

He has a CTS-V he's keeping and probably putting an exhaust on. That will be his growl option.

I need sound to match my acceleration. Id rather have a truly involving car than the Car Whisperer.

Involving equals but not limited to: power, exhaust, chassis, suspension, steering, braking, and an 8 track player.

Ask him to do 4 pulls back to back from 40-120 mph......
Come back and let us know how the 3rd and 4th runs went.....or if it happened at all
Chances are it'll heat up and go limp mode.

I know! M y neighbor just got one. I asked him to hit it while I was standing outside. That thing just hunched down and went like nothing I've ever seen before....but it was dead silent!!

I'd get tired of that fast. But there is a part of me -- maybe 20% -- that wouldn't mind. Its kind of appealing, like an athlete taking down an opponent with no sweat, fuss or noise. A dead silent assassin.

I know I'd get away with a lot more fun when my wife's in the car. Everytime the engine growls in the M4 my wife looks up from her cell phone and checks the speedometer! "110 m p f'kn hour are you kidding me..."

I know Teslas can hit 3.5 secs 0-60 but how does it do on the track? Will it keep up with the 4door M3? Anyone have a video or information on Teslas on Tracks?

Its a fat pig so its ass would be handed to it on the track and after 100 mph in a straight line it would get caught.... but it does have "launching for dummies" down pat.

What I've always wondered about the Teslas is with the literally instant torque, how do the wheels not light up every time from a hard acceleration? The tires are pretty skinny and cars with much less torque have trouble keeping the tires glued.

Those are the bench marks
Prices will come down and cars like this will become more mainstream and affordable
Look at the F80
A $65k sedan with an F1 style gear box in the 11s 1/4 mile in the 90s would be unthinkable
My point is Tesla is not what I'd want in a performance car.

Yah that's what I figured... another American muscle performance underneath all that green cloak. But I hope they do a track review on the Tesla atleast!

They won't and or can't
It'll overheat before the hot laps can be established.
That's why there aren't any lap times
People who by these cars a pretentious IMHO if they want it for environmental friendlyness
They boast about zero emissions but yet fail to realize it took massive amounts of fossil fuels , more so than a ICE car to manufacture
And unless your electricity comes strictly from solar or wind it has a carbon foot print
If you're in Ca, electricity more than likely comes coal , and that is far worst than me burning Dino oil in my 20 yr old 35 mpg acura integra

c'mon guys, the P85D is so freaking awesome. It wasn't meant to ever compete on a track, just to be an absurdly fun daily driver. If you haven't launched in one yet I don't want to hear any complaints about not having sound to accompany the speed. Its a seriously crazy experience and its so different that I wasn't missing the sound at all. not having any shift points is also bizarre, your body expects the jerk of a a shift under hard acceleration and it never comes. Very different purpose from the M3/4, and it accomplishes its mission beautifully.

The experience isn't any different from my old gt40r DSM on e85 running low 10s at the strip
Its not the sounds that's missing or the fact it goes limp after 3 highway pulls
Its when you turn the car and it wallows and rolls and refuses to change direction , kind of like a boat
It isn't a great daily driver if you need too drive more than 150 miles each way
Its way too expensive to start and itsnt obtainable by people who need the gasavings the most
People buying a 130$k + car isn't concerned about saving fuel at the pump, its a status symbol
Like apple watch, useless and overpriced but says to others you have money
I'd rather get a full bore 911

that is true point, tesla is more of a proof of concept that it can be done. just like i8 is a concept that it can be done with style and performance.

even though electric market might pick up, i doubt performance sector will suffer, sound/feeling and just mechanics of it will keep purist community alive. To prove that we can look at american hotrod/classic car market, it is booming like never before

They launch at 0 RPM and essentially 0 HP. In a ICE car when you launch the engine is rotating at some thousands of RPM and then as soon as you release the clutch the rest of the drivetrain, including the wheels, has to catch up very quickly.

When both cars are coming off the line, a P85 has effectivetly 0hp to put down to the pavement while an M5 has to put down ~330hp engine power + gearing multipliers. (500ftlb @ 3500rpm = ~330hp). Couple that with AWD and you have a 0-60 rocket
