Terrifying experience

Last night i was driving my 2020 M850i grand coupe on the I-20 interstate and the car just went dead on me in the middle of the highway it said Drivetrain malfunction i had ignition but the car wouldn't restart. after about 30 minutes the police pulled up and make sure i was safe. I called towing and as we were doing the necessary steps to put it in Neutral it started but i still had it towed to my home to prevent further damage, i was able to drive it into my garage, and all the status in vehicle is green as if nothing happened. on monday ill habit towed to a dealer so they can tell me something. does anyone else have had this experience if so please explain what is the problem and how was it solved.

Not just plain driving but yes. Once last winter turning at a light on ice the tires slipped a little and instant drivetrain malfunction. Was able to very slowly crawl into parking lot and shut car off and instantly restart and all is back to normal. My car is an 850i and sits around 800bhp . If I try to launch hard it will spin and cause this. Ive learned a simple shut off and back on clears it. It won't restart until you put it in Park. It shuts down in gear. Possibly you didn't have it in Park at first so it wouldn't allow restarting?? Scary isn't it?

Yes pretty scary indeed with vehicles passing by at great speed, the thing that has me concern is that i was operating the machine normal speed.
I wasn't able to shut it down until i hit the stop/start button x3 with my foot off the brakes, then i put my foot on the brakes and disengage the parking brakes, then i was able to shift the transmission to neutral, then it started just fine. Also this morning i started it and everything seems fine all the status are green.

I carry a scanner with me just in case I get some weird code that causes driving issues. I was out Friday trying to get the car to launch the best it can for a 0-60 time. After several drivetrain malfunction the wrench stayed on in the dash. Drove fine so I just scanned and cleared it out. I can see BMW charging several hundred dollars to clear it. I dont trust them.

These random and reproducible warnings and limp mode seem to be par for the course. 3 weeks into owning by 850, while driving about 50 mph it suddenly bucked a bit, sent off all kinds of drive chain warnings, and went into limp. Very discouraging for a new car, after such a great 3er and 4er experience for12 years! But given 5 minutes sitting in a (limped to) parking lot, restarted and no alerts! And no more for the last 5 months. Never sure if it was a drop of water in the gas, some lucky cosmic ray hitting some digital gate, or ....

I had a brand new at the time E55 AMG do the same thing, eventually after many trips to service they found a wire to the fuel pump wasn’t connected properly.

That car was sold long, long ago and hope your issue is something just as simple but much easier to find.
