Thats where I would differ substantially - really dislike this grill design and TBH not in love with the outsized air scoops in front as they don't seem to flow with the rest of the car body to me - don't get me wrong there is a heck of a lot I like about the car overall but these are critical brand defining areas that to me the car has strayed too far from.

I wish they had come up with a much narrower design element up front with a greater homage to the best looking pervious 8 - could have been ridiculously sexier imo!

It's such a shame that bmw is watering down the grill for production. It works perfectly and will sell. The bland grill is too pedestrian and generic ie. Toyota.

Be bold bmw and you will be rewarded. Keep going down the path of generic and you will get bitten.

Here is a really terrible hacked render in respect following up on my comment above with respect to the grill - would love to see them actually reverse the trend of ever bigger grills and do something a lot more sophisticated than me squeezing the picture !

So true. Hopefully the production version will be toned down in the grille. Also, its not kidney-shaped. I'd tone down the front so its not screaming lexus and modify the shape of the grille back to something that resembles kidney-shape and you have an amazing car.

I like the overall design a whole lot.
But I'd prefer Shadow Line trim, black M Performance grille, and black wheels.
Maybe black chrome in all those areas instead of just glossy black.

And, come to think of it, there's enough room in the C pillar (behind the mutant Hoffmeister Kink) to put a roundel. Like the 3200 CS.
I think I saw one of those last August at Laguna Seca during Car Week.

Thanks Dackel. I like the look of this concept, hopefully most will be brought to the actual car, although the kidneys are too big!

What I really like is that original concept M8. Interesting that the removed the pop up headlights on integrated to the grill! Still love that design! Wish I could get one and deal with the ongoing costs! No practical for me at this time a little pricey as a weekender car!

It looks like much of the recent 3.0 CSL prototype went into the new 8 series. These are truly exciting new designs.

Thanks for posting all of the pics. It was nice to see the new 8er's, great great grandfathers...lol
I do see some Aston Martin in the new 8 series. it is funny to me, that the 6 Series seems kind of chunky now, compared to the new 8.

I would just save some money and buy old classic 8 series beauty. That new one looks like out of space. Personally I don't like it at all

The handleless doors adds to the sleekness and the beauty to the new 8's design. I wonder if there is a secondary way of manually operating the doors.

Front end and some of the rear made me think of the new Lexus design language.

Nicest though

Am I the only person who thinks the front end looks like a Maserati Ghibli? To me, the 8 looks like the Ghibli from the front and an Aston Martin from the side...but I suppose it's all subjective. Sadly though, I don't like it.

8 Series vs. i8

I love the new 8 series concept. Hoping the production car will not vary too much from the concept (do agree the grill could get a little smaller). I'm going to have to make a tough call in 2018 as to whether I want to buy the new 8 series or the LCI refresh i8. I realize the two cars were developed with different objectives, but both of them appeal to me, albeit in different ways. I'm hoping both production models will be unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show this September. Dackel, I assume you will be there to share with us the latest and greatest from BMW.

Yup! I will be there.

I think we might also see the new i8 roadster at Frankfurt too.

I like the look of this new 8-Series concept. I don't think it has a bad angle. The grille is somewhat large, maybe a bit too large.

The only thing that would concern me are all the lines and shapes on the sides and rear. They look great in these photos, with a dark colored car, and lighting that casts shadows to accentuate these lines. But how will it look in brighter light, with a light color such as silver or white?

Light colors tend to cause such lines to get lost...

Maybe we will see the car in a different color at Pebble Beach.
