Ah, crap - bent rims

So it finally happened - I ran over a pothole and bent both rims on the passenger side. They are bent at the barrel, so they can't be straightened. The front tire blew out the sidewall too, but that will be replaced at no charge because I have the hazard certificates through Discount Tire.

I am thinking to go through insurance via a claim as BMW quoted me over $2200 to replace both (my deductible is only $250). And no, I didn't have the wheel/tire insurance.

With all the rain that Colorado has had, the smallest little crack in the pavement gets turned into a pretty nasty pothole within a day. In this case, it looked like a puddle and I hit it at about 45 mph with no chance to avoid it.

This hurts.

I feel you. It’s a regular occurrence here in Michigan as well. Last had three bent rims repaired at 180 a piece at the dealer and had the tire hazard insurance at discount tire for the tire damage.

Total bummer and feel your pain as the wife's bulging tire on the X5 and rim damage equalled a pot hole. The streets in our area used to be pristine and a pothole repaired within a week (or 2 max). Now with every incorporated city fighting budget issues, etc. there are potholes which have sat for months with no repair. I just avoid those streets like the plague but when forced to drive on them I have my JBV1 app all marked with their location to remind me way early to avoid them.

Irony is the only BS package I applied to what the BMW finance team sells when executing the sales docs was the tire and rim package for the wife's new X5. Knew I could pick up the hazard insurance certificates from Discount Tire but did the quick math on 10 curb rash/wheel damage repairs at the $200 the dealer charges and just went with the package. My wife curb rashes all the time so $ well spent plus full tire coverage as well. 😜

Wow sorry to hear that.

After having about 10 sets of aftermarket plus size wheels on various vehicles, avoiding pot holes is like a second nature to me. I pray it doesn't happen with my current car.

Jeez, I guess the roads around here aren't as bad as I thought. Never bent a rim in 50 years of driving.

Just ordered the front passenger rim from BMW: $1,200.
The rear is nowhere in stock unfortunately, so it had to be ordered from Germany.

As an aside, the tech at Discount Tire told me BMW and Mercedes have the highest frequencies of bent rims. He said they're not very durable. Not sure of the statistical accuracy of this....I'm sure it's anecdotal from his observations.

Good to know even if to your point mostly anecdotal vs empirical data. Feel even better now with the 5 year wheel/tire package I bought for the wife's new X5. She'll curb rash the hell out of each rim so $ well spent and if a pothole bends it even a bigger win. 👍

This thread is so relevant. I live in CO as well and just yesterday I hit a pothole on the freeway. It is the same route I take every day so the pothole was new. The tpms didn’t go off so I didn’t think anything of it. I ended up driving for the rest of the day and saw this when I got home.

I had a regularly scheduled oil change so I took it in. Having the wheel and tire package came up clutch.

I think it's because so many German vehicles have larger wheels and lower profile tires. The Audi RS6 can be optioned with 22" wheels. Add to that, stiff suspension on the high performance trims.

Ouch. And isn't that a sickening sound (hitting a pothole)?
My sidewall bulge did not look as bad as yours, but it was starting to "accordian" so it was spreading along the sidewall. Glad you had the wheel/tire insurance!

Thank you for the kind words. My heart dropped when I hit the pothole because I knew the tpms light would flash up. Crazy that it didn’t but my service team is recommending an alignment so there’s that. Colorado roads are undefeated. Lost so many wheels and tires driving on them.

I’d actually check if the car is pulling to one side before doing the alignment. They are trying to generate revenue so I don’t doubt they recommend that.
