I know it can vary, but what is the average cost for a decent looking set of wheels and winter tires including mounting the tires and swapping them out for the summer tires on the car?

For me, the right wheels make or break a car. After model and color, wheels are the most important styling element in my car choices. So when I lived up north, I always kept my OEM wheels on my cars and only swapped the tires between seasons. That's the way it was done for decades. It's only been the last 10 or 15 years that we've been told that a full set of wheels and tires was necessary for each season. I think it's crazy. I know that some will say you need to down-size wheels and tires for the winter, but I've run 20" snows without any problem, but of course was smart enough not to try to drive in a two foot blizzard. But 8 - 12 inches? Zero problem. And with respect to those of you who have made the choice, 18" or 19" wheels look terrible on a car as large as the 8er. I just couldn't ruin the look of my car for almost half of the time I own it. I only use quality shops, so have never had a problem with damaging my wheels when swapping tires, it's more cost effective, and it maintains the OEM look of the car year-round. I know I'm in the minority and will get blow back cuz no one does this anymore, but it's worth the consideration imo. Just my $0.02.

My wheel shop stores and swaps my wheels sets for $50 each spring/fall. I agree with Hinckley's post above, a second set isn't necessary. Personally, running 20's with the crappy winter roads here in CT is something I'd rather not do. Certainly asking for a bent wheel. Mounting and balancing shouldn't run much me more than 20-30 per wheel. You'd be looking at $200-$250 per season to swap tires out if you decide to go that route. I do agree that 20's look so much better but 19's look pretty nice too. Photo below are stock 19's. If you go with an all black wheel, the difference in wheel size should also be less noticeable Last edited by fmzip; 10-20-2022 at 07:50 AM.. |

I'm not tire smart enough to know how good or bad swapping just the rubber is, but yes I've heard that it's not great for the tires. Also -

I needed them for the first 1,000 miles: several snowy passes and one 8,000 foot pass in a near blizzard when the temp dropped to 28 degrees. They even did the job in Death Valley. I didn't slide off the road once. I had Alpin5s on my two M5s. They are a very good winter tire. The Sottozeros have a much more aggressive tread, so they are probably a better snow tire. But they were squirrely - probably not suited for windy 2 lane roads in the SW at 75 mph when its 90 degrees outside. The 8" width didn't help either. I'd like to get new snows for my OEM 728 wheels this year and then look at an aftermarket set for summers next spring. Last edited by snowbimmer; 10-20-2022 at 11:47 AM.. |

Needless to say, I will never rush the swap over EVER again. This is all the wintery mix you need to have no control of your car with summer tires on |

I'll be the forever jester on this thread as there is no winter setup here in AZ.
Here's a couple of quick pics while getting gas with the new P Zero PZ4s on shortly after picking up from the dealer so ready to roll for our winter months. Vic55 same pics I sent AN and now they're all over me to bring the car in as wanting to increase the cash offer. |
