Does anyone else have a plastic foot rest on the floor next to the rubber brake and gas pedals?

It's probably not something most people see, but apparently the 2019 m850 has plastic where the 2021 has metal ???

It's just a m850 thing, or is it on the m8 too?

Hi Res, that is weird as I have only seen the "metal" version on 2019 M850i models such as in the picture below (taken from a dealer listing). And I can confirm I have the same variant in mine which is also MY 2019.

EDIT: I was wrong. I have the plastic footrest. See comment #17 below. (Pre-edit post: Metal in mine, as per FBWWINS photo above.)

Indeed it is clear from the picture you posted above. Here are 2 more for comparison both cabrio models from MY 2019 & MY 2020 respectively and both featuring the metal version.

Yep mine is plastic but, for a different reason to yours....all rhd BMW G15 vehicles only come with plastic because for some unknown reason BMW doesn’t seem to want to make a metal RHD footrest....ridiculous.

Also, mine’s got a few scuffs and I wanted to change it out. Unfortunately, the footrest is not a separate piece, so it was a pretty extensive replacement (I didn’t bother).

It’s easy enough for you to get a matching metal footrest....I don’t know how the OEM one attaches but, the aftermarket ones (again, only LHD) that match your pedal design was a straightforward double sided tape attachment on top of your plastic footrest.

If I remember correctly yours is an 840i. This means you can go for the M Performance pedal upgrade (including the footrest element)! I wish I could do that.... but according to BMW they arent't compatible with the M850. Check out the following part number:

M Performance Stainless steel pedals: 35002232278

You can probably find them on the Bay for less than 100 Euro. I had these in my previous cars and loved them! They look slick and really give a nice touch to that footwell and make up for some contrast especially if it's all black down there.

Yes and it's unfortunate there isn't such a pedal upgrade from BMW. However, if you like them, AC Schnitzer offers them and some BMW dealers in Germany are even selling them directly. While I like the M Performance ones definitely better, here are the AC Schnitzer ones in case you haven't checked them already:

Looks like BMW was cheap with the light carpet color to have the footrest match it. I seem to remember seeing this in one of the Barcelona Blue 1/400 launch cars I saw, but I could be mistaken. My dark, black carpet (fiona red/black merino) '19 M850i has the metal. Maybe someone else with the light carpet can confirm?

Indeed as you say just found a local listing here - a 2019 M850i and it has the plastic one too. So as you say BigMoto looks like light carpet color interior is the "culprit".

Well, crap! I just rechecked and I stand corrected. My 2019 'vert has the ivory white interior and carpet - and, yes, it has the beige plastic footrest. I hadn't even noticed insofar as the 2019 'coupe I originally had (long story) had a dark interior and the metal footrest.

So, the theory stands: Light interiors apparently got the plastic footrest and dark interiors got the metal footrest. Not sure I understand why this is, but there you have it.

Confirmed that on my 2020 M850i Coupe with Fiona Red/Black I have the metal footrest. I'm going to guess that the plastic footrest for the light interior/carpet is designer or Fengshui decision on BMW's part.

I had no idea that those were compatible....I’ve got an ivory interior and so it has the ivory footrest which looks really cheap and shows up scuffs badly (and you can’t get dark marks out...trust me, I have an arsenal of cleaning products)....great find (again) how come they’re not compatible with the 850?

According to REALOEM and BMW ETK (online) the following applies to that part number:

Stainless-steel pedals
M PERFORMANCE
Automatic transmission
From:08/01/2012To:-

Part 35002232278 was found on the following G15 vehicles:

8' G15, 840dX, Coupe, B57, AUTO, EUR, (BC21) : M Performance pedal supports + footrest
8' G15, 840dX, Coupe, B57, AUTO, EUR, (BC22) : M Performance pedal supports + footrest
8' G15, 840i, Coupe, B58C, AUTO, EUR, (AE21) : M Performance pedal supports + footrest
8' G15, 840i, Coupe, B58C, AUTO, EUR, (AE22) : M Performance pedal supports + footrest
8' G15, 840i, Coupe, B58C, AUTO, USA, (AE23) : M Performance pedal supports + footrest
8' G15, 840iX, Coupe, B58C, AUTO, EUR, (AE41) : M Performance pedal supports + footrest
8' G15, 840iX, Coupe, B58C, AUTO, USA, (AE43) : M Performance pedal supports + footrest

Though there is the important following limitaton, with BMW officially" saying that if the car is equipped with the M Sports package these pedals will not fit. That would explain, or explains, why the M850i isn't mentioned at all. It would be interesting to know if they technically fit or if indeed the pedals and footrest have different sizes which aren't compatible with or over the standard ones (on cars with M Sports Package). It's a real shame as this would be one of the first upgrades/retrofits I'd consider for the interior.

Going out on a limb here (I often do with my outside-in theories on just WTF BMW is thinking) but I'm guessing they will fit as overall one would expect from a manufacturing perspective they are equivalent. Otherwise they need two configurations for the manufacturing line for what is in essence the same part. In the manufacturing world that is asinine as reconfiguring the lines is overhead cost that impacts the overall COGS which would not be a smart play on BMW's part whatsoever.

As for why the M850i is not listed you are spot on, i.e., there is no "M Sport" option as it was built in from day 1 given it was the launch car for the entire 8-series. The 840i's came along in 2020 as a variant to offer less performance (with an appropriate price tag to match) but also the "M Sport" design option (up charge) to physically match the M850i's.

Now here's where it gets interesting. I spent some time on the BMW configurator and the only way I can get the plastic foot rest to come up is on the 840i without M Sport. Any M850i (coupe or convertible) with Ivory White or any combination (Ivory/Night Blue or Ivory/Tartufo) all display the metal foot rest. So perhaps this was a 2019 M850i faux pas on cars equipped with Ivory White interiors as with the 2021s (and guessing the 2020s) that would not be the case.

I think light plastic looks nicer than this with the light carpet.
