Americans Value Patriotism, God & Children Less Than Ever

According to a new national survey from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, younger Americans' core values differ sharply from their countrymen of earlier generations.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/america...mobilewebshare

While some similarities on key fronts remain intact, dramatic gaps have opened up on the questions of patriotism, belief in God, and the importance of having children. This chart tracks the percentages of Americans who say the following issue sets are "very important:"

As you can see, large super-majorities of Americans aged 39-91 prize patriotism, while just over 40 percent of Millennials say the same. A super-majority of Baby Boomers and the Greatest Generation say religion and a belief in God is a high-priority value, along with a majority of X-ers. Less than one-third of younger Americans agree. Millennials are also the least likely generation to say having children is very important to them, scoring roughly ten percentage points lower than X-ers on this question, and approximately 20 points lower than Boomers and up.

Suffice it to say that the impact on American culture and politics will be profound when these rising generations take the helm; the numbers quoted above aren't static, of course, but it's a safe bet that America's future will less confident in (and enthusiastic about) our country, and far less religious, with a population potentially in literal decline.

Call me old fashioned, but a populace that will value America, God and children markedly less as time passes does not fill me with great optimism and hope. I fear that a society that is less patriotic, significantly more secular, and less interested in procreation will be unhealthier, overall.

Well, I'm pretty patriotic, but I'm an atheist and we made the decision to not have children.

I'm a good neighbor, I take care of my property, I pay my taxes, I vote, I don't steal or cheat. I love and care for my family and friends.

You're an anomaly. I mean this in a good way.

Well, I appreciate it. However, I sincerely hope you're wrong, for all our sake. I certainly don't feel like I'm "better" than average.

I guess my first question, for simple curiosity, is how old you are? A range is fine, I imagine.

Interested to see where you fit into the buckets within the survey.

My next question is what I believe they should have asked instead of the patriotism question. Do you believe in American Exceptionalism? In that America is generally a better country overall as compared to others around the world.

Personally - I am okay with someone having reservations about American Exceptionalism if they have traveled the world and feel that other options are as good, nearly as good, or better than America. Where it chuffs me, is when so many younger groups of people feel that America is a worse place to be as compared to other countries with no basis for this opinion other than what is fed to them via teachers, society, the media, and politicians.

I'd be curious to see the results of the "having children" question for the older generations, when they were younger. I remember when I was 18 (I'm 35 now) having children was very, very far down the list of priorities.

I'm also patriotic and agnostic.....American exceptionalism is a stretch for me, but that doesn't go against patriotism.

You can't fully understand the calamitous shape the human race is in until you've been on a dating site. Trust me on this.

Yep, as with almost every survey, how the questions are worded can "steer" the responses a great deal.

I've traveled a little - the Carribean, UK, Canada, Mexico, Malaysia. I wouldn't choose to live anywhere else.

"The grass is greener" is an axiom for a reason - it's human nature to feel that way.

Well prior to the sewage-ification and sludgifying of online dating.

That is certainly the truth. I've been to close as makes no difference, 50 countries. I've found that, in my opinion, America offers the best life with respect to overall freedom in my daily activities as well as the overall cost of living as compared to around the world.

That said, however, there are many other countries in which I feel are nearly as good, or if you value very specific things, may actually be better for some folks.

I try and keep an open mind on this. I have very unusual views on this, though, as I spent many years in the military or working for the government overseas in areas of conflict. It's a dichotomy for me in that I feel quite patriotic, but also feel as I've already 'done my share' if asked to serve again.

i met my current wife (she likes it when I call her that or the ex-girlfriend) on a dating site back in '04, but I had met a few other women on the site before I met her and was shocked at the bold face lying that goes on. You post a profile and I suspect you plan on eventually meeting with people, do you not think they will notice that you're 50lbs heavier and 20 years older than you say?

This. They open with a lie from which there is no recovery. Good strategy!!

I'll end my and discipline myself.

I'm kind of the same? I think...

Not sure if I would consider myself a patriot but I love the US, wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I appreciate it for what it is and recognize it's shorts comings but I was born and raised here and it's where I call home. But I'm not one of those hell yeah 'murica kind of guys so I don't know where I fall in that category.

Yeah I don't value God at all. Honestly, I think it's a remnant of the past that has done more harm than good.

As for children, I think they're wonderful and precious but not quite ready for my own yet.

This younger generation are often anti-patriotic (having almost no sense of what our country stands for or where we came from and how damn unique we are). They are often more concerned with animals (mainly their own little shitty handbag dogs) and think children are "annoying". And they don't value God, only their god (themselves).

end rant.

You make an interesting point, while I was reading it I was thinking about the 60-70's and the anti Vietnam movement.

Absolutely!

Scotland, Oz, New Zealand and Japan are all still on our list. We LOVE Toronto, I could see us being happy there, (Montreal is beautiful, but too cold) as well as several other Western nations. I don't think I'd voluntarily choose any of those places over the US, though, I'd have to have outside motivators (job, family, health, etc) to convince me to move.

I am a millennial and I have already made up my mind to never marry or have kids. Too much risk and very little reward makes no sense to me. I don't really care about religion or society in general, so I just go on about doing my own thing on a day to day basis.

It's almost as if decades of letting in millions of illegal aliens with values completely different than a natural born American citizen would have some sort of impact. Shocker!

I view it as a historic aspect, I don't want to be the genetic dead end for all my ancestor who survive much worse then I ever have to endure or was under much more harsher condition then I'll ever live with. Would make me appear to be a total failure at the one goal that was set for me as a living organism and make their struggle really wasted due to my own selfishness. But that my prospective you do whatever you feel is best.
