Night Vision
Does anyone have the night vision option? If so how exactly does it work? Does it always have to be on or does it automatically engage? Also is it worth it in your opinions. Any information is greatly appreciated.

To see the camera, u have to manually switch it on. At night, even if it's not switched on, it does see people and animals and then will alert you in the center screen behind steering wheel. If you don't live in tree lined area and curved road areas, you won't use it much. (I live in Dallas, not much use here. ) Also, high temps sometimes render it useless. It's a fun gadget but I never used it to help me avoid something.

I have it on mine - first time I've had this as an option.
Yes it is a manual on / off switch. Likes: - at night on our country roads it is excellent - it has highlighted a few kangaroos which I would not normally have seen - and they can do major damage to cars and the humans inside - at night coming down our road which is long and winding and does not take a lot of traffic - it highlights people walking dogs very well Dislikes: - you can only view it through the main centre screen, I would prefer if it would come up in the smaller drivers screen in between the dials or as an overlay - or even better in the HUD - in the main screen the image is not full screen so it looks like a 4:3 on a 16:9 |

It's probably on some older cars, if they are already built and on the ground. But it was so rare to find. I'd wager 1 of every 1000 bmw even had it. |

I had it on my F10 and G30 and LOVE IT. That said, its usefulness really depends on where you live.
In the Seattle suburbs, we have long dark nights in the winter months. We also have lots of deer and runners who don't always wear reflective clothing. In my F10, the night vision saved my butt at least once. The F10 alerted me of an animal but Audi traveling on the same road didn't see it and hit the deer - I had time to slow the car down. If not for the Nightvision, I would not have known there was a deer on the side of the road until it was too late. If I had ordered my G16 I would have included night vision on the build. |

We have it on our car. But living in Hawaii, have never used it except to just see what it was all about and most likely will never use it. If I had chosen the options during the build I probably would not have selected it. Maybe if we lived somewhere that actually has animals running across the road or near the road at night it might be a different story.

Could not agree more. May not become a reality for awhile in the current cost cutting climate.

Images appears to be 30ft in front of the car, so the eyes don't have to re-focus like on current HUD's. Night vision sounds like a perfect addition to that. Hoping BMW will also add these same features. Could be sooner rather than later... |

As mention above it probable depends on where you live as to whether the option is worth the investment. I live in the US north east and a few nights ago the option saved my butt when two deer ran across the highway in front of me and the alert flashed on the display screen and I was able to slow down and avoid hitting the two running across the road.

It works on infrared (heat) radiation. It looks kinda like an old black and white negative on the screen, but it's not an optical image, it's totally from heat (or lack of heat). Hotter stuff glows bright white. Even in the day you can see tire tread imprints on the street as the car ahead drives away. I live in a city so it's mostly just a party trick. In 5 and a half years of ownership it's never done anything useful.
