Finally Did It!!! M850 Resonator Delete

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Took delivery of my 2022 M850 GC back in November. Still waiting on some mods to come in but in the meantime, thought I'd see what kind of sound I could get with a resonator delete.

Haven't seen anyone else on here attempt it yet except for the M8. Found a couple of videos on YT but they were based in Europe and done on the '19 and '20 models. Most know the sound really got neutered for the later models.

I'm happy with the results. Some might not be since it definitely does not take the place of a full exhaust system like Fi but honestly wasn't looking for something crazy expensive on a lease for just a little bit more sound.

I'm happy with it for what it is. FYI videos could definitely be better quality, was in a hurry when shot them and won't be able to re-shoot for a while. For some reason comfort mode on startup and idling sounds better in the clip than IRL but nonetheless can definitely notice a difference over stock. Should have let it idle more in sports mode to get the full sound but oh well. Anyway, here's some videos for anyone who's been on the fence about it. Replaced with straight pipes btw.

While I did mine on the M8--- I cant see it being a bad thing. With my engine I gained that all important decibel addition and really didnt notice much drone.

Here is a video we did with just the resonator pulled and then with the 2ndary dps pulled (no cel of course since 2ndary)

A resonator is not a muffler all it does is adjust the flow to smooth it out so you do not get drone in the cabin. You will noticed many high end mid pipe setups still have resonator to account for this.

I did this on my M50i X5 it did nothing for the actual sound out put, however the cabin had very slight sound added which easily is covered by conversation or music. I would never do it again, and just buy a cat back system for the sound I was looking for.

It did increase the db's for the car I have and own with the video posted- clearly its louder than one without (pre 2ndary installs). I kept the same tone but got more "noise"

but then again my car is not an M850i...

Further its a 150 dollar job to remove and straight- to the OP its easy to reverse too.

Edit: did this also on my F90 with the same engine; same increase in decibels and extra pops (if you want that shit LOL)

I did find this video on the M850i --- its full of bs so go to around the 8 min mark

The only real way to tell is to measure it if decibels are more. The real change is the actual tone of the exhaust. That is why with your setup it got very raspy and high pitched. If you did it the other way around you would notice a deeper sound like on my X5MC where all I did was the secondary DPs. It's like fooling the ear when you talk about resonators. The M series use a empty H pip chamber design with nipples so there is no restrictor inside. (at least I've never seen anything other). If you put an X pip your sound would still have been even different than straight. I would recommend putting X if you want the resonator gone. Sadly I no longer have my X5MC or a video of it.

Thanks for the breakdown of the internals!

I agree the resonator can create a different tone and I actually like the lower grunt and then the change in tones up top. Those are stand still rpm revs vs true load changes while driving (video).

Again all of this is with the M8 and my thoughts with my former M5, and not the M850i

Thanks everyone for the replies. Seems resonator delete might be rare on the M850 vs. the M8. Heard Vic55's video a while back and knew that was the sound I was going for or close to it but we'll see what's possible. Worse case can always put it back right away.

Having it done this Friday at a local shop so hope to post videos. Also working with Ben to install the CTS Turbo Air Intake once the KW springs come in.

I'll mention this to the shop guy who's working on it about the X pipe vs. straight. He hasn't worked on a M850 before but a ton of high end cars including the M8. Thanks
