The Toughest Choice

Not sure if there is a blog on this, but about to move from the F82 to either the G82 x-drive or M850! x-drive Coupe.

Driven both, love both, the sound is of course of the 850 is like a drug, want more, not so for the G82.

I think the M850i is one of the most amazing looking BMWs ever made. The new M4, not sure, but a great car.

Any advice or regrets from people who have made this call would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers from AUS.

I moved from an F80 to an F92 while I also having a G82 in my sights. I was pretty well decided on the G82, but with the lower residuals and discounts I was looking at for a G82 at launch, I started to look up a little higher and I was able to get into the F92 for about the same monthly payment on a lease.

The car basically fixed everything I didn't like about the F80 as a DD. Road noise, comfort, traction, interior quality were not issues any more. Granted, the G82 addresses all of those compared to the F82, but not to the same degree.

The only "regret"/downside to going up to an 8 series is going to be the weight. You certainly can't toss it around like you can an F82, and it's not going to be as emotional of an experience (my 8 year/old swears the M8 is slower than the M3 getting on the highway). Those "cons" are direct results of the "pros", though. If you want a quieter and more stable cabin, you get the heft and numbness.

Plus, yeah, it's an amazing looking car.

Do a double take on getting the V8 motor. Has BMW really addressed the valve stem guide problem, over heating caused by the twin turbos on top of the motor (called a hot V configuration). If you are buying this is a big consideration.....if leasing not so much. Another thing.....BMW has greatly discounted the 2022 models....so look at some big discounts on a 2021 model as in reality, you are behind one year now with the early release of the 2022l. I looked at a G82 also....but went with the M850. My SA steered me to lease this car...I had regrets, but now 1 month later I did get a great deal. If you plan on keeping the car for a long time...avoid the 8 series.....I can remember back when the original 8 at 6 years old was fetching less than 10K USD on the used car lots.....just because it is expensive does not mean that it will keep the resale value. Also the steering on the 8 series, just plain sucks.....in my opinion it does not want to do its job.....BMW missed the boat. Drive both.....do some hard thinking and research.....and decide.

I had a 2016 M4 that I liked a lot; had it tuned, lowered, etc. A great car and excellent performance. I have been thinking hard about getting the new xdrive M4 that will be coming out. I would, of course, have it tuned and all the other goodies.

While I do enjoy my 2020 M8 Competition it seems large and heavy, but it is super fast with a tune at approx. 800hp at the crank.

Bottom line I prefer the M4.

The larger M8 or 850i are more exclusive I'd say, meaning you don't see one at every street corner. The M3 and M4 aI think will be like that so you just blend in. Either are great choices depending on what you're after.

Thanks for all the advice and feedback. If I go the 850 it will only be for 3-4 years.

At this stage leaning towards the G82, although no deals on this being so new.

Not 100% either way at the moment and will continue the research and I want to spend more time in the 850 as at the moment I have only driven one for 30min. Thanks again everyone.

The only thing I'd say about the m850i is that compared to an S63Tu or S55 S58 engine is that above 5000rpm it feels like the power falls away quite dramatically and they don't really seem to enjoy being taken to the redline whereas the S engines all like to rev to just over 7.

Went with the M850 about a month ago.

The pricing on the 21 M850 was the same as the 21 M4. So I automatically went with the M850. Ain't paying for something being marked up.

But to me, the tough choices were between the M850 and M550i. Both same engines just different looks. About 30k differences in MSRP. But after putting them side by side, I still opt for the m850 for being unique looking.
