The difference I can see is that the T3 is USB 3.1 Gen1 vs the T5 is USB 3.1 Gen2. My original Lacie also was USB 3.1 Gen2 and so is my current Crucial SSD. All of which of course are supposed to be compatible back to USB 3.0. Back to the firmware issue theory I'm now wondering if the USB interfaces in the 8-series (charging pad and in the console) are both USB 3.0.

From what I could find via Google searches it appears that iDrive leverages the QNX (a Unix based microkernel OS). I suspected as much and hence when I purchased the Crucial I specifically looked for generic Linux support which it has. Basically the firmware in the controller of the SSD may still be the issue in its presentation of 3.0 to the car and some drives still not being recognized.

I guess the moral of the story given the theory is go with something that is well proven to work in the 8-series (or iDrive 7 in general), e.g., Noushy's SSK enclosure or the Crucial SSD which now comes in a 2TB option as well.

Good point! I actually downloaded the Samsung firmware updater this morning and tried that. Although my T5 did need a firmware update, it didn't resolve the issue. I have been searching for a way to make the T5 work in the LINUX world this morning to no avail. I'd just hate to go buy another drive setup if there is a way to make this T5 work. I love it...it's super small and they really hold up well over time.

Has anyone tried a usb c thumb drive? Given the reduced form factor it would provide a more elegant solution to the problem. 1Tb drives are available. Personally, I just plug my iphone in the center console. However, it would be nice to have my whole collection on the drive.

In the past they worked fine. I used 128/256 drives with no issues mainly samsung. However they are much slower to copy to and I prefer large libraries with HD files so the larger faster M.2 ssds are far superior including searching files. That is a 2TB intel drive in a third party slim anodized metal case able to copy from my macbook pro at 1100Mb/s

Same here but I only get 1050 MB/s when transferring files from my QNAP NAS enclosure that holds my FLAC (and movie) libraries. I wanted 2 TB (which is now available in the same form factor) but when I purchased the Crucial SSD the max I could get was 1TB. However, when I get bored of the music on the drive it takes less than 20 minutes to load it up with completely different albums. Eventually I'll take the plunge into the 2TB land but for now I'm a happy camper.

Yes although newer 665p is out. Another word of advice don't go for super fast m.2 drives as they are very hot, the intel are slower but never get too hot and that matters when the car is 100degrees in the sun in a glove box or arm rest.

Thanks for all your help, noushy!! I've got my m.2 drive all setup & the center console reads it perfectly. I'm slowly loading, testing, loading more FLAC albums from my QNAP NAS. It's stupid fast!
