Winter Tires

Hi,

As of next Thursday I will be leaving the 7-series forum after four years and joining this fine 8-series one .

I picked up an m850 GC CPO with only 16k/km, the car looks like brand new inside/out, fully loaded with almost every option.

Question regarding winter tires. I have a set which are mounted on OEM BMW rims, 245/40R19 which I’ve been using on my 750. Would these wheels fit on the 8 since the bolt pattern on the 7 is the same as the 8? Thanks

Is that a square set with 8 inch wheels?

That's the standard 8 series winter setup and it's great that you have OEM ($$$) rims too.

I have a 245/40/R19 square setup with Nokian Hakkapeliitta rubber so I think what you have is perfect. Just change the IDrive settings when you put them on for correct speed.

My tires are on 3rd party rims though. Still cost me about $3600 tax paid.

Thanks Rob! I have Michelin’s on my set. Regarding the iDrive, what speed should I select? In my 7 I did not have to select anything on the iDrive 5.

Thanks for your reply! Not sure what you mean by 8 inch square set. If that means staggered vs none. My set is not staggered, all four wheels are the same size.

I meant 8" wide wheels, not staggered. OEM wheels are 8" fronts and 9" rears.

I got nothing for you on the tires, but welcome to the forum and congrats on the car!

The reason I asked if it was a square set is because the snow set for the M550 and M850 are the same - 245/40 19 on 8" wide wheels. I put my M550 snow set on my M850 when I bought it and then left on a 4,000 mile trip to the SW US. Running Sottozero3 tires. Once I got out of the snow I was stuck with skinny non-performance winter tires. The handling was really squirrely. I hated them. I couldn't wait to come home and put the summer Pirellis on. Plus, the profile dropped back down because of the 20' wheels and the rear stagger went back to 9".

Last winter I put Michelin Alpin4 winter tires on the 20" OEM wheels. So, I was able to keep the lower profile and wider rear stagger. Very, very happy with the performance and handling. 8" wide wheels on this boat are just too narrow.

Then, this spring I upped the game and went with a new summer rim set: 9" fronts with 255s and 10.5" rears with 295s. Now the handling has really been transformed and its a completely different car.

So, you can run the 8" square set up (check your offsets - mine were 30), but if you don't want your handling to suffer you might consider snow tires for your OEM wheels. Then again, if you don't go anywhere and are just tooling around town to just get through the winter months, you're probably fine.

My 2 cents.

Did it come with the motorsport/cooling package? If not, there's no dedicated oil or transmission or steering cooler. No Bueno.
