Winter wheels and tyres
Hi all,
Winter will soon be upon us in the UK, and given where my commute takes me I want to look into winter wheels and tyres. Is anyone running a specific setup you could share please? Ideally I'd be looking at 19" wheels - I'm told G30 5 series wheels should go on an 8, but will these fit over the brakes? I'd rather avoid the cost of 20's if possible! Any advice appreciated - thanks. Car is an 840i coupe for reference. |

I'm on BMW 786M 8x19" ET30 in black on my M850i. 19" is standard size for the winter wheels so no problem fitting over the brakes. I'm running Pirelli Sottozero 3 RFTs 245/40 and I think they have been amazing both in terms of grip (seldom get more than wet roads and the occasional slush in Souther Sweden, hence I opted away from studs or Nordic friction) and comfort, even if running very high tyre pressure.
I know BMW also specs 727M 8x19" ET26 as standard winter wheels, also with Sottozero 3 RFTs 245/40. If your winters get really hairy 786M is approved for snow chains, 727M is not. Side note: on the 786M they put tyres with H speed rating, on the 727M they have V rating (go figure - could it be because 786M is forged and 727M is cast??) |

Winter is coming here soon as well. In my preparation I ordered a convertible, so I can have the top down while the weather hits a chilly 60 degrees 16c. But just found out it might be spring before it arrives.....
Serious note thanks all for the info on tire setups for the 8.

245 all round, that was BMW's official recommendation for the winter wheels. They do have *-marked RFT winter tyres in 275/35 19" so I don't know why they are choosing to not go with a staggered setup in wintertime. Maybe just to keep the width down a bit for higher ground pressure if it gets slippery.

So can you do a wider front than rear set with the 876M? BMW doesn't list it for the 8 series but I see this setup exists:
https://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/6...ET-BLACK-MATTE This is for an Alpina B8, based upon the M850i. |

I'm using on my M850GC a set of 19" wheels with 245/45R19 F/B RFT which I was using on my previous 750ix with no issues.

Got another one....hit a pothole...wasn't even that bad but somehow bubbled the rim???
Oem 786m wheels. The bubble is in the center of the rim and the wheel still holds pressure and was at 42psi when it hit. |
