Oh, I've been checking the dots a few times a day for the past two months even though I knew it wasn't supposed to start being built until the end of May... But now it more officially begins

The screen can definitely be changed to the LCI screen. I know someone did this in their G30 5 series and put the newer 12.3 screen in for the 10.2 that came on the pre-LCI and it works perfectly out of the box due to them both being I-Drive7 systems.

That being said, I see the 3 series LCI is getting the curved screen and I Drive 8. BMW really cheaped out overall on the 8 series and they have done so from day 1. They should have gotten the bigger 12.3 screen when it was introduced in 2019 just like the X5 and X7 which came out the same year. This is why I won't even consider a pre-LCI 8 series. The tech is just way behind overall versus other BMW models....

The fact they are putting ID8 on their cheapest cars and still not on the 8 series....is a joke. Same with no massaging seats....no M60i engine....no quad tips on the M-Performance models, etc....they are doing all this on the X7 LCI and will do the same on the X5 LCI next year.

The 8 series has just been an afterthought for BMW from day 1.

I'm newish to getting into 8's, but it seems that they had high hopes for it initially and were certainly quite ambitious with the pricing. It had some great features like the IR camera (I think?) and then as the combo of chip issues and sales maybe weren't what they hoped they dropped the price and figured they didn't need to invest too much effort into it, hence the lackluster updates for the LCI. It's a sweet car and I can't wait to get mine, but it seems they are maybe just biding their time til the end of its life cycle I think in 2025 when they come out with that new 6 series that is a mash up between a 4 and 8. Hopefully Dukec will be back at Citroen by then.

It does annoy me that if I'm paying for BMW's most expensive car (not counting Alpina) that I should still get their top notch stuff. A few dealers gave me what I believe was "dealer speak" that "don't worry, BMW will save their parts/chips/radios/etc for their expensive cars. They are going save the stuff for the people paying 8 money as opposed to the people paying for 3's." Unfortunately certainly seems to not be the case, although I assume to a degree for the reasons I mentioned above.

BMW's high hopes for the 8 were dashed pretty quickly. It was over-priced out of the gate and just couldn't compete at that level. Things spiraled downward pretty quickly from there . . . a one model year hiatus, elimination of the base M8 and then the price drop. I've never seen BMW being forced to retreat so quickly on a model. That's why it's doomed to be a one and done model, and why there's been no investment in the model.

I'm a bit ambivalent about wishing for the new iD8 interior. I think that BMWs without the large screen are going to feel pretty dated pretty quickly and that bums me out. OTOH, I HATE the elimination of the shifter to the point that it may have been a deal-breaker for me if the 8's LCI had switched to that little nubbin thing.

There is part of me that wishes I had the new fancy tech of iDrive 8 because that's where BMW is going with everything however I really don't like the lack of buttons that it has so I'm kind of on the fence about being upset about not having it. And I am kind of intrigued about the idea of no shifter though. It's definitely a cleaner look and a change. I like the clean look of it but I have no idea how that little thing functions and if I would like using it or not.

I'm happy to have gotten probably one of the last "BEST" looking modern BMW's and with everything I could want as far as tech and buttons. ID7 is very nice smooth and quick compared to MANY other brands I own or owned. Knowing everything is going to the tablet glued to dash design or wide aspect panels I think having one from the transition is a great thing. The M8 will go down in the books and one day be worth new prices when its 20 years old. No doubt in my mind about that just based on two factors Looks and V8.

I'm actually very happy the 8 doesn't have the ID8 screen. Having been behind the wheel of Tesla's / e-Mustangs, etc. I actually find the massive touch screens to be a distraction and unsafe. I can do everything I need / want to do from the ID7 control by the shifter, without having to navigate an on-screen touch interface. I suppose it is all user preference. I do have real concern about drivers spending too much time looking at those big screens and not enough time looking at the road.

I really don't like the new curved screen setup. It looks out of place. I think Mercedes did it better with their new setup.

I think ID7 is great, too.....but I prefer it with the bigger screen. That being said, I haven't seen it in a BMW car (only in my X5M and X7).

My F90 still had ID6 and I know the screen was a little higher than the instrument cluster. In the X5/X7....the instrument cluster and IDrive are at basically at the same height...so it looks really put together and not just tacked up there (which is what I think some of you guys are complaining about).

ID8 really isn't that much bigger than ID7 with 12.3.....I'm totally cool with the 8 series just having the ID7 and 12.3 screen. However, I didn't want the 10.2 inch screen because I basically use all touchscreen instead of the wheel. To me, it's a large difference.....especially with how high definition the screen seems to be.

Has anyone wound up swapping the screen? Contemplating picking up a pre-owned '22 but would love to have the bigger display if it's plug and play

Hi, yes I swapped it in my M850, it just fits.. no problem, just plug and play. No coding or whatever needed..

Just have to pop off the cover behind it and unbolt two screws. Takes 10 minutes to install.

Shot a used one on ebay for around 350 Eur, seller thought it was the old one. They are very rare at the moment, also be careful there are LHD and RHD versions.

Is it specific to the 8 or is it the same as the 5 series one too?

For USA cars the specific 8 series pn for the 12.3 screen is 65-50-5-a40-d99.
