Yep, they are finally rolling this out which supports ultra wide band which gives a comfort access capability. Found this article from 2 days ago but sounds like I'll need to wait for a new OTA in the future to see if it can be added to my 2020 as the way it's written currently only models supporting it manufacturered in 11/2022 or later.

https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/usa/a...language=en_US

Technically this is the CCC digital key v3 spec vs the V2 spec that BMW initially rolled out. Fingers crossed the hardware in the 2020 can support it but not holding my breath.

Yes that’s right.
UWB I believe came in on SP21 cars and our platform is SP18. So unlikely we will ever get this feature.

So I have a digital key (s22 ultra) and I still have to hold the phone against the handle to unlock and lock--- what do I need to do here to get the Key Plus shit?

Buy a different BMW.

From another Bimmerpost forum:
Keep in mind it says for Digital Key Plus Capable vehicles.
That means only the SP21 architecture vehicles, such as the iX, 7 Series, X1, X5 LCI, X6 LCI and XM will support UWB-based digital key systems.
SP18 architecture based cars, which also include cars with ID8 (OS8) such as the M2, 3 Series LCI, i4 and '2024 4 Series aren't capable of them, due to not having UWB hardware capability and only NFC hardware (the pad and door handle)

What I expected as the future OTA to enable on more compatible models will leave us SOL due to just the NFC hardware in our 8's.

Reason being BMW even changed the NFC hardware on the 2022s (or was it the 2021s? but just no M8s) to support Apple digital key. If that hardware is required I'm still SOL even for NFC.

Pixel 7 and iPhones are supported now.

I still do not have the tile for setting up the digital key on my app. Dealer can confirmed it works on my car etc etc and no dice no matter how many times I remove and reinstall the app.

Have a Pixel 7 Pro now and my wife has my outgoing Pixel 6 Pro. Both are compatible but same experience as you, i.e., no tile or any way for the cell phone NFC config. Pretty sure this goes back to earlier postings on the thread that the dealer may need to activate. I'll ask when I'm in for my next service but not holding my breath as my 2020 NFC originally only supported the initial Samsung support.

They switched that up in 2021 (if memory serves) to support iOS but that requires a 7/2021 build date as they obviously changed the NFC hardware to do so. Your 2023 can handle it so ask your dealer on enabling it as they may need to do so.

The NFC card could be beneficial if you're going to get in the water, or stuff like that, where you don't want to risk losing or ruining your expensive fob. But the question is if that card is waterproof. Does anybody know? Thx.

Can I set up a digital key (on my iPhone) for a 2020 m850? Tried to read through the thread but didn't see a specific answer.

I bought it as a CPO just last month. Dealer ordered a replacement NFC card (original was missing), which I was able to set up successfully today. Don't see an option in the bmw app to set it up on my phone. What am I missing?

Simple answer is "no". That rolled out with 2021 builds from July on with updated NFC in the car.

No worries and frankly it is one of the aspects of the 8-seriea that has boggled my mind. Granted adding iOS and Apple's requirements did most likely need NFC hardware updates as newsflash... iOS is proprietary. The mind boggling aspect is NFC is an open standard and the 2019s rolled out with it for Samsung.

I know all about mobile operating systems as lived the game for 20+ years. Android is open and nothing Samsung adds (we call it bloatware) plus their Knox security should have stopped any other Android device that is NFC capable from playing ball. Perhaps just a QA testing limitation but seriously doubt that but rather a go to market partnership with Samsung for the exclusivity.

Can't seem to enable this with our 2024 840i gran coup and Samsung s22.

The process works up until it's in the tray and idrive starts syncing then errors out. Where this secret handshake? 😜

Use nfc and Samsung wallet all the time to pay.

Working now. There was a technical bulletin update needed on certain 2023 cars (you will know cos your car will not have the key card when delivered). Once that update is completed, a new key card will be given to you and the digital key option along with activation email will be sent to your myBMW app automatically

Excellent 👍. Unfortunately when I had the M850i in for service a few weeks back for a new tire thanks to a lovely construction staple plus getting iD7 upgraded to the 07/2023 release I totally forgot about the digital key. Missed that opportunity but I'll reach out to my CA and have him prove the SA manager to track if my 10/2019 build NFC hardware will support the listed Android devices now or I'm still stuck on Samsung only.

Update. On the wife's 2024 with digital key plus (aka the Car Connectivity Consortium Digital Key 3.0 standard leveraging UWB for true comfort access) I'm getting the tile in the My BMW app on my Pixel 7 Pro to set it up. Hence, pretty sure I'll never get the 2.0 standard on my M850i as it has the original build with Samsung only. Bummer.

Oh wow that is awesome. Meaning you can walk to the car and it will unlock without holding the key to the door or using the charging tray (aka Tesla)?
That will be a game changer in functionality between the 2023 and 2024 models.
I hate having to go through the driver-side door to unlock every time, especially when I want to get into the trunk or open the door for the wife on date nights.

Update. Found the list of BMW's supporting Digital Key Plus and no surprise the 8-series isn't on it as they probably don't to invest in a dying series in 2025. So far truly enjoying it on the wife's 2024 X5 40i as it is 100% a true comfort access experience. There is a bug though at least for Android that in a couple of weeks it somehow reversed to just a digital key and need to touch the handle, etc. I just delete the key and repair my Pixel 7 Pro and I'm back in business.

Catch-22 as the fix is likely in the 07/2023 iD8.5 release. Yep, they've retooled iD8 into iD8.5 and based on what I've seen I'm sticking on iD8 unless forced otherwise. Get this, i.e., not only did they eradicate the hard buttons (climate, memory, etc. which I already knew) but to my surprise they nuked several of my favorites on the steering wheel as well. The key ones gone are the distance controls for ACC (why or better yet WTF?) and the speed limit button which I use to keep me from sneaking above 9 MPH over the limit on city streets.
