2020 M8 Brakes Noise squeaking noise while slow braking
Hello everyone,
I have a 2020 M8 Convertible with 4,500 miles. After the initial 1,200 miles when I slow brake (at the end of the stop) My brakes sound squeak like a bus. Took it to the dealer twice and they said it was normal. $150,000 car with squeaking brakes. Does anyone else have this problem? |

It should not be normal but it happens more often than needed. Have your dealer replace the pads and rotors if possible. This might fix the problem but not likely. Or have them clean and lube it. Most people switch to higher grade performance pads to fix the problem. |

As Belugs suggests, lube your brake pads, this should certainly stop the squeaking.
Won't stop your car though, lol. |

Thanks Guys,
I tried to have the dealer replace the pads and rotors and they refused. They said this was normal. $150,000 car sounds like 1982 Pinto when breaking. I love the car, this is my first M car, but man the sound of the breaks is embarrassing.
Which brand of high grade pads do you recommend? Last edited by M82020; 11-19-2020 at 08:13 PM.. |

Don't change the pads you'll be missing the initial bite. Sometimes braking hard once in a while will clear the squeak for a bit. My F86 was the same however there was a campaign from BMW to change the pads and disks but I fell out of spec. The problem is most likely not having enough M8's to complain.

1) What is your use/type of driving? Commuting to work? Daily driver? Canyon carver etc. For a performance car this is normal WHEN the car is used as a slow A to B device around town or sitting in traffic. It can and will happen with almost any performance vehicle when driven this way. 2) Look at your rotors are they silver or are there blue-grey stains/marks on them? If blue-grey is present, is it uniform and everywhere or only in a small ring/band around the rotor? The blue-grey on the rotor is brake pad embedded in the rotor and will reduce both brake squeal and stopping distance. You want this on your rotor and it gets wiped off during low/slow braking from traffic or around town driving. If they are not blue-grey then you need to go out and get up to 60-80mph someplace safe and brake HARD (but don't go into ABS) several times in a row. This should fix the squeal for a period of time, going back to A-B around town driving and slow braking will wear this out and you'll need to repeat this process again, OR just drive it like you stole it all the time 3) If they still squeal after this then look to lubing with this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CINV88 "Remove and clean up the old pads. Clean the area on the piston and caliper where the brake pad backing plate touches. Apply the anti-squeal adhesive to the piston, reinstall the pads and reassemble your brakes. These anaerobic products will stay gummy until you apply the brakes and squeeze out the oxygen. Then they stick like glue." 4) If they still squeal after that change pad compound to a semi metallic or ceramic pad but as others have said they will not bite like the stock/squealing pads. HTH! Performance brake systems and/or some of the high performance braking components in general, mounted on any vehicle, are most likely to squeak at some point. Some do slightly (still hearable from within the cabin), others sound like freight trains!
I definitely can empathize with you. My Ferodo brake pads DS2500 racing mounted on my F32 did sound like a freight train, no matter if driven cold or warmed up. It was embarrassing yes, especially when braking those last 5-10 km/h and/or approaching a traffic light. Result? I removed them and switched back to M Performance pads because for me it wasn't worth it. Later, not wanting to give up, I went direction Japan with Endless (MX72 Plus) and NO squeaking whatsoever no matter if cold or hot. I did not buy the racing version of those, yet they still are high performance ones and have a great bite in all circumstances. And they last very long given they are performance oriented. |

The same issue with noisy brakes occurs with the M5 (F90). There are many posts over on the F90 forum. Besides the noisy brakes when slowing to a stop with the steel brake pads they also produce more brake dust.
I installed the Portfield RS-4 brake pads (front and rear) last December and could not be happier. Brake squeal has been 99% eliminated and brake dust has been greatly reduced. I do not track my M5 but I do engage in spirited driving and have not experienced any reduction in braking / stopping performance. Having owned a M3 (F80) for 4 years with the steel brake pads I never experienced the noise of coming to stop like I did with the stock brake pads on my M5. |

So far (and may be jinxing myself so knocking on wood now ) no issues with the brakes on my 2020 M850i from a noise/squealing perspective. Good to know though on some aftermarket options if the situation arises.

The more expensive and high performance a car, the more likely they are too squeal. They optimize brakes for performance rather than being quiet and smooth in large range of temperatures.
Driving lightly tends to make it worse. I've had good success with a series of heavy braking to get rid of squeal. Otherwise you're best bet is to swap to aftermarket pads. You might give up some performance, but should improve noise. |

I don't mind the squeak when breaking, I'm definitely used to it, and I can't here it in the cabin at all with the windows up.
If I do happen to be driving around with them down, I also get a a squeak when they're hot when I'm turning off brake at a relatively low yet moderate speed(less than 25 or so), and even sometimes when I'm just coasting. It's consistent/not periodic, so I don't think it's a warped rotor, perhaps a rock in there that I haven't been able to shake loose, but it's the same pitch as the breaking noise I would expect.

Sorry, I mean discs. After so much complaints, BMW sent an engineer to inspect the car. He said this was normal, but my service rep at BMW didn’t agree with and got an approval for the replacement.

I did 10 runs up to 160 mph and went fairly hard on the brakes and still squeak at low speeds.
Annoying.

Yep, zero squeaks on the m850. In fact when I was at the dealership, I asked and tested the m8 and the breaks sounded horrible. He said "yeah it's all the m8". If you're looking for comfort and quiet brakes; stick with the m850i.
