Winter/snow peeps, lets chat

So I live in Kentucky and we get decent amount of snow/ice in the winter. It's also not very flat here. I have a 2020 Range Rover Sport and the lease is up in a month. I have a 2024 M8 competition coupe that I just picked up last month. Im trying to decide wether to go ahead and pay 50k to buy the RRS for just like 3 months of winter, and it would sit in garage for the other 9 months. Or, do I just turn it in and try to survive winter with the M8? I know its 4WD, but worried about ground clearance mostly.

So I live in Kansas but used my M8 as a daily for several winters. We rarely get a snow over a few inches at a time but I was also worried about ground clearance. It actually was never a problem.

The M8 Comp did great in the snow and slick roads but good snow tires are an absolute must. I actually have a set mounted and balanced that I have been too lazy to list but will sell if anyone is interested.

Bottom line...I wouldn't be worried about driving the M8 in winter with the appropriate tires...without, it is downright dangerous!

I hate the idea of having a beautiful Range Rover sitting in my garage 9 months a year not being driven. I thought before I got my M8 I would drive them both equally, but once you drive the M8 CC you cant go back to anything else haha.

I just did the last 2 winter in NH in my M5 Comp with winters and plan to do the next few in the M8. Thankfully I have the kind of job where if it’s too bad out or going to be, I work from home. But the M5 was a beast in the snow when called to be.

I drove my M850i through last winter and realized I don't like driving a vehicle that low in winter. Actually, I hated it. As a convertible it was still exceptionally warm inside and with winter tires I never had traction issues. But, I had to be mindful about not driving on a street with deep ruts and also be on the lookout for chunks of ice (bigger than a softball) that fell off other cars and were laying on the road.

I don't like being part of the SUV crowd, but there's just something to be said about having decent ground clearance during, and after a heavy snowfall.

I'll be doing another winter in the M850i, but I'm not looking forward to it.

This is great input thanks. And yea this M8 is LOW to the ground. I'll just buy the Range Rover sport with a 5 year warranty and let it sit in the garage in the summer. First world problem lol

I think we live in the same city in KY and I used full winter Dunlops on my E90 M3 when I had it. Used winter Pirellis on my F30 340i Msport as well. No problems getting around with either combined about 10 winters. Just swap them early December through early/mid March and you should be fine. If we get a few inches of snow or more, most people will stay home anyway. I have driven up an unplowed neighborhood street with 5-6 inches of snow in the M3. Not ideal but it works. And I often did better than my wife in her X5 or X3 with all seasons. But that’s another story.

They are the 812 wheels in black with Pirelli Sotozero XL with less than 5k miles on them.

Shipping might get expensive but I can check if someone is interested. Need to list them in the classifieds but I have been lazy!

Here is an example of the wheels...

It was lowered?

My ideal dream setup (that I did have) was an X6 40i for a daily driver (and winter) and a Z4 for summer fun. What a horrible mistake it was to let those go and get this m850 that I have now.

Yeah, but you have an M850. Just don't see the problem here. 🤣🤣

I live outside of Milwaukee and my wife used our m8 comp as a daily driver all winter last year. We had a set of winter tires installed on the OEM wheels and never had any issues driving it all winter. Forgot the tire we put on, but I can probably find out if you would like. It's not the vehicle you want to drive through a foot of fresh snow, but that hardly ever happens anymore around here.

Not lowered. But still low. We get some pretty heavy snow in Louisville KY and im a surgeon so can't just not show up to work. Plus I gotta get to the hospital super early sometimes before plow trucks have even gone out. I think I just convinced myself to buy the Range Rover sport lol. Cant risk it.

With that said, I would agree 100%.

I live in a condo with a very short (1 vehicle length) driveway. Sometimes it blows in with a 3 foot snow drift. With the X6 I still never worried about getting in or out or getting stuck in the street. I don't have that same level of confidence with the M850 - even with winter tires.

Our winters are milder than they used to be but this is a good call.

I have an M8 and X3 and even in the nice weather my X3 gets a decent amount of driving. Sometimes I'll even chose to drive whichever one is dirtier if it's going to rain. It helps if your second vehicle is also somewhat fun. I used to have a Jeep as a second car and I'd drive it so little during the summer that the battery would die.

On the winter thing, I'm up in Ohio and my plan is to put a set of Pilot Sport 4 AS on the car. I won't drive it when there ia 6" of snow, but I'd like to not have it sit in the garage from November through March only being able to drive it when its over 45 degrees.

Maybe instead of lowering it you could lift it.

If you have real winter weather to deal with there is nothing like having the right vehicle for that job.
In my winter experience the M8 would not be my choice. It might do a winter but it's really not made for that purpose.

I traded my M850i and now have an X5. Now all I need are winter tires. Prices have gone stupid in the past 2 years on these!
