Garage queens are an entirely different story. Not sure it's a fair comparison.

Right. Just like saying all M cars depreciate steeply. It's a case by case basis.

Spends $175,000 on a BMW in 2020.

3 years later it's laughably outdated.

1,006hp!!!

More like 60%
Even the American corvette Nissan GT-R and 911 depreciate less the m8 m5 m2 or any M
Except the 1M?

The EV M5 could have 100,000hp for all I care. Won't go near it.

Lease. What depreciation.

GCs were and still are tougher to negotiate deep discounts on but I managed to make myself very, very happy with the ratio of smiles to $$$s. This is by far the best car I've ever owned... leased.

I love it. I've had it for 2 1/2 months and even with the pandemic, I've put 7,500 miles on it. The majority from driving for driving's sake.

I can't go anywhere without making someone point and smile... makes me smile right back. From 6+ft away...

Here's my view every morning and it's not one I plan to give up any time soon:

2017 M6 —> 2020 M8
2012 M5 —> 2015 M5
... I could go on.

+3 years has represented significant advances for the past few decades. This one represents a fundamental shift in the power train so the gains are larger for sure. But that's not the only measure of driving pleasure.

That said: I'll take one.

Agreed! Majority of BMW "buyers" are leasing. Depreciation is a moot point. Your M8GC is sick! Enjoy every mile!

Anyone who buys a brand new car of any bread should know that you instantly lost money and with a specialty luxury type car you'll lose even more. If you have any sense at all regarding investments you probably wouldn't be looking at 99% of the BMWs. Therefore the people that are paying the $150k or whatever are probably aware of the depreciation and either don't care or just lease.

I'm not a very smart guy but I always thought that BMW doesn't want you to buy the cars outright because they make far more $$ on leases. Is this car worth 6 figures? Probably a personal question but I highly doubt it. You'd be best to wait a few years and find a garage queen at a 35-50% discount and throw the extra $50k into stocks or something.

If I had the extra cash lying around I'd be looking at a gallardo or an r8 or something else and pick up a a cheap billet proof DD.

These arguments are funny...buying new vs used...losing money...at the end of the day a vehicle isn't an investment if purchased new or used. I personally don't buy used cars...I love owning new...i was able to get $12k off my m3. I've been a financial planner for many years and always chuckle at these convos.

It all depends on someones goals, financial means, and what they choose to spend their discretionary income on. I own 3 vehicles. I love cars and don't mind "losing" money buying new. I'm liquid and very much diversified in my portfolio between stocks and real estate so potentially losing some money when/if I decide to sell my m3...who cares.

To each their own...we only live once so enjoy!!!

X3M/X5M/M5/M8 are all really attractive buys once they hit that three year mark.

Yeah, a nicely equipped to loaded C4S is going to be in the $170,000 range.
