Do you DD your 8? Quick and easy poll.

I'm thinking about buying an M850i convertible. I don't think it will be my one and only daily driver. It's a lot of money, a lot of car, to have sitting in the garage most of the time. I'm curious what others do.

I don't but you could definitely DD a convertible. The main reason I don't is that I live in NE and don't want to deal with changing tires in the winter.

absolutely, mine is mostly a spring summer fall car but no questions you can. The GC is probably the best DD but I have a coupe and no issues. I had a M6 convertible and it was fine, I put 50k on it in three years of driving.

I have the convertible, and it's not my DD (I have a large SUV for daily), but I live in DC with a lot of rain and snow.

You could use it as a daily and a lot of my neighbors do in fact.

It depends where you live, and your tolerance for bad weather. and if you're income/wealth allows for it.
if you're young, flexible, and want it as a DD, you certainly can drive it year around.

I'd probably put snow or all weather tires on it for winters; but the convertible is comfortable for me even at 40 degrees outside. everything is heated.

convertible

to your point, it is a lot to have a 6 figure car sit in the garage 25%-50% of the time.

However, I'll tell you that the 33% of the time when you CAN take it out, drop the top and ROAR from 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds with the wind whipping around you is as close to heaven as I'll ever get.

Keep in mind, insurance + maintenance (gas, tyres, etc) + cost, you're looking at about $2000 per month on a 2019 m850i convertible to sit in a garage.
but I'd pay $24,000 just to drive it from June-August. September to October and March to June is a "bonus" .

if you need a daily, I'd definitely get the m8 gran coupe.

Finances are different for everyone, but when I got my financial advisor license (many years ago) the rule of thumb was to keep all your vehicles under your salary. it assumes a five year loan / timeline for cars.

Thus if you earn $200k / yr as a household; and your wife's car is $80k, your m850i is $120k, you technically don't have "budget" for a third winter/daily driver.

that assumes 0 debt and a house payment that's around a max of double as the cars. (max 50% house, 20-25% cars, 25-30% living)

Yes it's my DD but I'm moving to South FL and just got the car a week ago. Currently live in CT.

I see now I should have clarified that I was looking at the convertible, but still, thanks everyone for the feedback and votes!

The top is high quality, but it's no substitute for a real coupe style roof. It's drivable in all weather, but it's not much fun in the rain or snow.
