R&T Cites Consumer Reports Review Naming 15 Buick Regal Top Sports Sedan

No that is not a typo and you read that right. Road and Track Online cited a Consumer Reports article where I nearly fainted. CR has lost its mind picking a Buick and even going out of its way to mention the pick is preferred over German Sport Sedans. I will be canceling my subscription as any legitimacy has left the building in a cloud of legalized substances.

Please try not to laugh as you read this I bet you can't!

"Fans of German autobahn cruisers are breaking out their venom-tipped quill pens as they read this. An American car, an American front-drive car is one of our Top Picks? Unbelievable! Surprisingly agile, the Regal defies Buick as a brand stereotype. Because it is an Opel underneath, it has that Teutonic ride control that provides a Europhile driving experience. Close your eyes, and you will think you are driving an Audi, a very good Audi at that. The 259-hp, 2.0-liter turbo is sharply integrated with a six-speed automatic and available all-wheel drive, and it remains responsive across a linear power band. The IntelliLink infotainment system is intuitive. The value-for-money equation is strong. You can even get a Regal with a stick shift to bolster your sport sedan credentials. It may not be as luxurious as the German giants, but a well-equipped Regal delivers a lot for the money"

I've been one to be pretty open minded towards other brands like MB AMG and Audi RS, etc. There are some great cars out there and the competition is really benefiting all of us. Having said this I agree that R&T's choice is laughable.

I recall that the Regal GS 0-60 is about 7.1s with an almost 300HP I4 turbo? I would look it up... buuuutt...you know.

Why not just drive an Audi?

I usually have a lot of confidence in Consumer Reports, and have maintained a membership for many years with added confidence purchasing items recommended by this organization. This is quite unsettling...I guess the sky is falling.

merely a loss of credibility for consumer reports; not any shot against the M or others

I could be wrong, but I don't think the M3 was even in the mix. Do they even have enough data on reliability to rate it? If not, that will disqualify it right away. Plus they made a point of saying it was the best value for the price of 35k. Who knows how much that weighed on the pick.

Anyway, I don't think they picked this over an M3 for best sports sedan. I have never driven one, but sat in one at the car show last year. You better close your eyes because the interior is classic cheap GM interior and don't touch anything either.

Maybe it does drive great and is a good value in the segment. I still find it hard to believe that it is better than ATS, 3 series or A4s etc. I'll never know because I have zero interest in the car.

Edit: I also don't think R&T has anything to do with it. They are just reporting CRs picks for top cars in the segment. Thread title is a bit misleading.

Consumer Reports sucks ass. When I saw the last review they did on the M3 with two idiots who didn't even know how to set up the car and giggling about dumb crap....I gave up any semblance of integrity for them as car reviewers.

When a company spends equal time reviewing blenders and washing machines, why the hell would I find any validity in their opinion on automobiles.

Where did you get those numbers?

6.1 seconds to 60 MPH and 259 HP in the T trim.
6.2 for the GS.

Motor Trend loves the Regal too.

This is what I mean though. It's not competing against the M3/4 and it didn't even win this comparo against a 320 so everybody can calm down.

Well, that's unfortunate, as I test drove an Audi (get a crazy good employer discount on them) and didn't like it at all. If that's they best they can say, that's not much.

It's CR so why worry. They always pick price and reliability above all else. Resale value is next most important. They are useful for people who think of cars as appliances to get you from place to place. Car enthusiasts need not apply.

I would only worry if they detected a reliability/safety issue with the M3/4 car design.

Here's the link to these f'ing idiots reviewing the M3. What a bunch of fools. Go to 1:30: "We got this dual clutch…uh…uh…automatic…." How can you take CR seriously? Ever?

I was going based on memory and didn't care to stop to move my mouse and type on the keyboard to find out... same result. Still boring numbers for that HP/TQ. Audi S3 = 0 - 60 in 4.7s with 2.0T. Done and done.
