Well I finally bit the bullet and ordered the raw tank. As opposed to the black coated one. I think the silver color will look good. A contrast anyway.
Very nice folks at RK Autoworks !! Very helpful and responsive. FAST shipping. Shipped this morning and arrives here on Thursday. Although my car is still asleep til the snow is gone for sure. So I have a question that you guys might know. I have one of the IND billet coolant caps on my res now. Can we use those on these billet tank units. Is the OEM cap a pressure relief type? Should we be using the billet units at all? I don't think they are pressure relieving. Does this billet tank vent somehow if needed? The pics show it with a stock cap on it. Waz up with this venting stuff boys? |

I have the coolant cap but it's on the car in storage right now til the spring. I just don't recall seeing a pressure relief device in the cap. Hopefully somebody here has a definitive answer. Honestly I don't even know if the OEM cap has the valve either. I don't have one here to check. Maybe some of the guys that already installed one of these tanks will know?? But, all things plastic seem to have a high likelihood of failure. Mine didn’t have issues but I track the car and was amazed at the temps on the exhaust side after using a good quality IR camera. If it does leak, what a friggin’ mess, so it’s a bit of prevention from my point of view. No downside except the cost for the part. Installation in an hour. That’s it. |

I guess I'll have a 22k plastic unit for sale. Never leaked yet. But we don't get the crazy hot days here they do in the southern states. If it's 90f here that considered HOT. But I'm also along termer on this car so figured WTF. Can't hurt and can only add to the reliability long term. It'll will be installed in about 2 months. |

I highly recommend to ask them. Maybe it will with some other mod made. They'd know why it won't anyway. |

Yeah that is where I got the info from. But honestly, if it's not a big problem in the M850i and I keep the car I will just proactively swap out the tank for a new one. If I do I will put heat shield material on the bottom of the new one. Not a hard job.

So I opened my tank box today. Wow! What a nice piece of manufacturing expertise.
It's a thing of beauty for sure. Almost too nice to hide away. Solid as hell. Heavy too. Quite the amazing workmanship imo. I'm actually thinking that for the money it's a lot of value. Looks hard to make to me. They even have a FULL or LOW indications carved out in letters down inside under the lid. Easy to tell what level your at. I'm impressed with this unit for sure. It could sit on a shelve to admire almost. Gonna be nice piece of mind once installed. Bravo RK ! Nice work! Last edited by M8Bimmer; 02-21-2024 at 04:51 PM.. |

Has anyone monitored the coolant temps with the billet tank and compared it to the temps with the OEM tank? I want to know if temps get higher in the aluminium tank.
I'm looking forward to seeing long term reviews on the RK tank. Ordering from Europe, it ends up costing 10x the cost of the OEM plastic tank, so I want to be 100% sure that it doesn't leak at all. |

On my 2020 m850i the same, got a leaking coolant plastic tank. Interestingly, the bmw replacement tank was having a slight different design and different oem part number as far as I can recall it. I got pretty lucky to randomly spot it early.
