How susceptible are the M8's?

I was wondering how susceptible M8's are to relay theft. I have Ghost II and S7 Tracking installed but wondering if Faraday pouches are overkill. The car is parked in a locked garage anyway. And yeah, I know if they really want the car, they will make a plan.

Keys go to sleep after being left alone for a few minutes. I put mine in a Faraday pouch anyway, but probably overkill as you suggested.

Multiple Systems is the best way to go. The more number of deterant the better. Visible one help as well as secret ones. YES the pouches are a good idea. ANYTHING you can do....do!
Better to be prepared than later say to yourself "shit, I should have done this"
Plus ya sleep better. Yes a garage helps a lot.

Take the battery out and use the physical key.

Leave the key at home and use smart/digital key—current vers require absurd local vicinity to door handle, later releases not so much.

I don’t share these concerns but I get it. In your shoes, I’d work around/avoid the root concern vs. protecting against its purported vulns hence the thoughts above.

And all of that renders comfort access moot—so for me, I’m gonna go with convenience as my preference albeit a very likely unpopular risk… which leads me to:

Are there stats as to frequency of this method of theft? Does it work for engine start, too—presumably so if it works for doors. Surely manufacturers are aware and are working/have solutions to prevent this. Rolling keys and a 2-way encrypted unlock transaction seems the most obvious. Heck, even precision timing transactions would solve this (sync’d precision timing serves to infer distance) and, assuming the channel is tamper-proof or tamper-evident through aforementioned crypto, et voila.

I use a faraday pouch for key which is a pain really. Any advantage comfort access gives is offset by me having to do this
Yes the key switches off if stationary but I play safe and do this regardless

I’ve seen a video where a couple of scumbags roll up outside a house at night with some sort of radio device with aerials and a few seconds later , they are in the car

I suspect that most if these types of theft are when the area is quiet and this sort of thing doesn’t happen more in public view as it’s more obvious

I wish I could just switch off comfort access as it wasn’t an option I wanted but there doesn’t appear to be any way to do so

I also put on a steering lock which I feel is a good deterrent

I was the victim of car theft back in Feb 2019. Assholes stole my fully spec’d and individual F10 in about a minute in the early hours of the morning. I foolishly had not thought of using or come across Faraday pouches back then. The car had a tracker - little good it did - car was never found, not that I’d want it back necessarily. Lesson learned the hard way. Police caught one of the guys (the one waving the antenna) attempting to steal another car a week later. Still makes me sick and angry watching the videos.

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Since then use Faraday pouches and a Stoplock Elite Pro steering lock.

For those who want some extra security try an ODB lock device. It another great way to fuck over the thieves.

I guess another way of answering this is how much is the car insurance

Now I know there are many factors that affect this but if the premium is significantly more than what you had , that might be a clue

I know range rovers are practically uninsurable in London at the moment due to a high number of thefts

As mentioned the fobs go to sleep so a relay attack imwould be rare at this point. Also as mentioned if one uses the digital key when out and about then once again the relay exploit is nullified. I point that out as if one is using a fob and let's say walking around a grocery store with it in the pocket then the key stays active and a thief in the parking lot (depending on the distance) could exploit it.

Forget a relay attack as there is a new game in town using the car's CAN bus (OABR in the case of iD7 on our 8-series). A car protected in one's home garage (I have a sensor on the garage door that alerts on open/close plus a Ring camera always on detecting motion) is pretty much safe. However, in a parking lot, etc. fob, digital key, etc. wouldn't matter if the theif has enough time to take off a headlight (hard on the 8) or a taillight.

I wired C4 in the trunk with a detonator linked to my phone.

They can take the car, but…

I wonder if the thieving scumbags can wait in a line behind you and scan the keys that way. The same way they do to a debit card or credit card. While standing close to you in a store or line someplace. I keep all my cards in a faraday holder.
Anybody here know anything on that?
Just wondered if our keys can also be scanned or duplicated this way. Seems like it could to me???

For instance they see your nice 8 series and follow you to the store or wherever your going. Then follow you in and scan you while you wait for your Burrito or dry cleaning or the line at the movies. Then throw a tracker on your car and come back later? Seems feasible.

All this tech means it still makes sense for some “old school” security. I have a Disklok for my 8, and whilst cumbersome to fit / remove, it means thieves cannot physically drive the car away even if they can get in & get it started.

No they can't. But that's where the repeater attack comes into play.

There are many examples of this that at least have hit my news feed here in the US. Thieves put an Apple AirTag on the high value target and then look for anyway possible to steal it in the wee hours of the morning. Once again a garage is your friend but those are out there with either too many cars or live in condos, etc. that ultimately means the car is easily accessible.

Apple AirTags notify you if there is an AirTag near your proximity.

Yes, but that was a later feature added after several scenarios, e.g., car theft, domestic abuse stalking, etc. However, sad to say most people are sheep and don't even know how to use the feature.
