F1 2024: Bahrain GP - Sakhir (Mar 2)

F1 2024: Bahrain GP - Sakhir (Mar 2)

Schedule:

Bahrain International Circuit

Quote:
Sakhir
When was the track built?

Ground was broken for the Bahrain International Circuit in December 2002. Like the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, the developers had a blank, sandy canvas to work with, and with that fashioned the technical, 5.4km track designed by Hermann Tilke.
When was its first Grand Prix?

It was 2004 when the drivers first lined up under an unusually cloudy sky for the inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix. The race was dominated (like many in 2004) by the two Ferraris, with Michael Schumacher winning out from Rubens Barrichello, while the crowds were also treated to a fantastic dog-fight between the Jaguar of Mark Webber and the Renault of Fernando Alonso.
What’s the circuit like?

You can usually expect great racing and decent amounts of overtaking in Bahrain, while the drivers have to contend with wind, racing under floodlights and the difficulty of finding a decent set-up with the wide temperature fluctuations between sessions. The track’s most challenging point is the tight, downhill, off-camber Turn 10 left-hander, while the fast run through Turn 12 is another highlight, allowing the racers to really feel their cars coming alive.
Why go?

Given the nature of the track, race-goers in Bahrain have always got a decent chance of being treated to a 'duel in the desert' or three. Away from the race track, Bahrain, as you might expect, is a great place to catch some rays, with the 33-island archipelago kingdom featuring some jaw-dropping resorts. And if you want to do some racing yourself, the Bahrain International Karting Circuit, located right next to the track, is one of the world’s top karting facilities.
Where is the best place to watch?

Your options are slightly limited in Bahrain, given that the organisers understandably don’t want loads of fans having to traipse out into the middle of a hot desert to watch the action! We reckon your best bet is to get a place in the Batelco grandstand, giving you a great view of cars charging into Turn 8, hammering through 9 and 10 and then passing you on the run down to the short-apex Turn 11. Otherwise, the grandstand on the outside of Turns 1 and 2 will allow you to watch overtaking aplenty on either track layout.

The first new race of the season!
What is going to happen? Are there teams that have gained incredible steps in their performance?
During the test days we've seen that a lot of cars have imitated idea's of last year's RB19 car, except....RB!
The new RB20 looks radically different around the sidepod intake areas and the extra intake area next to the new 'Bazooka' air ducts.

What are your predictions regarding who's gonna win the race?

Here are mine:
1. VER
2. PER
3. SAI
4. NOR
5. HAM
6. LEC (somehow something unlucky is gonna happen.....again)
7. PIA
8. ALO
9. RUS
10. TSU

True. Weirdos going on that it is not an exciting sport because Max wins. So what? There are 20 cars, 10 teams and 3 places on the podium. Itís very exciting.

As things hopefully begin to die down in the RB camp with the 'internal complaint' business being resolved soon, Marko has sent a bow shot to the others that the RB20 is not just an evolution but something much more with the team able to change the aero more than once to suit a particular track.

Last year, Ferrari drivers had 7 poles. With this year's car being a big improvement (easier to drive), it wouldn't surprise to see them double that number. Both Leclerc and Sainz are among the best qualifiers.

You are nothing if not predictable. So if we just got rid of Max Verstappen we would have some first class top shelf racing?

We could just give VER & PER a 20 second head start. Then see how many drivers could hunt down PER

I think the reverse grid is the way to go. What would be more fun than watching Red Bull's start from the pits. Not exactly the spirit of FIA racing but fun never the less.

The first month of the season is going to be telling. If RB20 really improves over the RB19, then the season is likely a wrap barring any reliability issues. The RB19 was said to be very close to EOL in terms of any significant improvements with regards to pace so if the RB20 steps up the game with the new additions, it's is highly unlikely anyone will catch up to them.

The season really becomes Mercedes vs. Ferrari vs. Aston Martin vs. McLaren.
