Uneven tyre wear Bridgestone Turanza

As per title, has anyone experienced bad wear of the centre section of the rears?

Measured last week and the fronts were 5mm across inner, centre and outer on both fronts.
Rears however are at 3.5mm on both outer and inner tread but down to 2mm in the centres meaning I'm due replacement and will be binning tyres with more than half of their tread left.

Always run at 39psi as recommended so not over inflated, currently almost 11k miles.

Its an xdrive touring if it matters.

The I drive recommended tire pressure is too high, results in rounding of the tire and the uneven tread wear you are experiencing. Try 35lbs.

What tire width section are you running on the rear? (245 or the 275)

Edit: is this a 520i or 3-series? (3-series, staggered... 225 or 255 on the rear?)

He’s in the G20 forum so I certainly hope that’s what he’s posting about.

Few other threads on this. It’s a known issue with the wider profile turanzas. I’ve tried every possible tyre pressure to see if it made a difference. I found running a few psi below helped slightly but essentially it’s the tyre ballooning under higher speeds that causes the central wear.

All turanzas users are finding this. I’ll be swapping to something else once they need changing again. Struggle to get 15k from the rears and I drive like little miss daisy with 70% motorway journeys.

Another example of Bridgestone tyres being shit - well documented on the 8 series on Potenza S007’s the inner edge wearing so severely that it comes apart from the tyre wall, and only after 2-3k miles. I wouldn’t put their tyres anywhere near my car.

Middle wear is not just a Bridgestone issue.

This is from Continental Data:

Quote:
This wear pattern is found on driven wheels of highly motorised vehicles. Even today’s mid-range cars have modern engines generating high levels of torque and capable of producing high degrees of slip. These high torque levels, during strong acceleration or in stop-start urban traffic, or when accelerating away from traffic lights, can quickly increase wear of the tread centre.
Add in centrifugal growth on tires, running many miles at higher speeds, and pressure settings are not always the problem.

Thanks for replies. To confirm, yes it's a g21, I must update my profile.

That's a shame on the turanzas, if nothing else but because they have been a good tyre for the most part, confidence inspiring in the rain at least. I think ill try a set of conti sport contact 7s as I can get them a good 250 quid cheaper than michelins and review better at present, be my first time on non run flats for years.

I wonder if the it’s just the run-flats that are an issue? My G21 330i came with Bridgestone none-RFT from the factory, 255/18 rears, and wear is even at 38psi.

I've got fed up with my turnazas (and may just be me, but they seem pretty noisy)
Had a blow out at weekend- my 3rd in 9,000 miles with them.
Michelin PS4s going on tomorrow.

It would be interesting to know your use.

The problem I see with tire pressure discussions, use has a lot to do with wear patterns and what is the optimum setting pressure.

Someone else using your pressures, could easily be wearing off the shoulders in their driving conditions.

A simple example of difference in wear patterns, is simply the length of trips. The percentage of time at (or near) the optimum working pressure.

A driver who does lots of short trips, many in wet conditions, requires a higher setting pressure than the guy driving 60 miles at a time and/or mainly on motorways, to balance out the wear across the tire.

Mostly myself as occupant.
No luggage other than the occasional doctors bag when seeing patients at home.
Drive to the practice is around 14 miles one way. At practice 3 days a week. One teaching day at a local medical school around 20 miles that day as a round trip. One online/telephone consultations day.
One 70mph stretch. Otherwise mostly 40-60mph.
Less than 150 miles a week for sure.
Weekends golf usually use the wife’s car as that is a 50 mile drive (no pun intended).

I had my turanzas removed yesterday and the edges are all pretty pristine (6mm +) the centres however are very low- 2-3mm. The tyre place guessed that it was due to over inflation but couldnt be sure. Only done 9k.

Anyway, I had michelin PS4s put on and they are noticeably better. Quieter, grippier and hopefully won't have 3 blow outs like I did with the Run Flats.

Think this is my next purchase in the next couple of months.

In exact same situation as OP - only 17k kms on the clock. Rears under 3mm, fronts 5-6mm. Must figure out if replacement tyres must be ‘manufacturer approved’ with the star symbol. (FWIW my previous BMW, a X3, also came with Bridgestones. Had to replace them at 22k kms. Put on Michelin’s - still had 3-4 mm tread all round after another 40k kms when I traded the X3 in)
