They aren't quite what I pictured them being. If I didn't know I had them I wouldn't know I had them. I shut my doors as I have on every other car I've ever owned. I think I've tried gently pushing the doors closed (which I don't think anyone does normally) which causes the soft close thing to take over, but unless I'm missing something it seems like a pretty worthless feature.

My wife's X7 and my 840i have the soft close doors. My X6 does not. I don't think it makes much of a difference when closing the doors from the outside. It is actually pretty convenient when closing doors from inside the car. Just requires a more gentle pull. I find myself having to open the X6 door to pull it more forcefully to close it quite often.
That being said, I would not have paid for the soft close doors if they had been an option. Just one more thing to worry about failing and repairing in the long term. |

It is sort of a goofy feature when you think about it. Just makes the car feel more luxurious I guess. Reminds me of the "self-closing" trunk on a late 80s Buick I had. The trunk lid had to be manually lowered until the latch made contact, then it pulled itself shut just like our doors. I remember thinking back then "that's the most pointless thing I've ever seen."

The soft close feature is to prevent us from feeling like boorish cavemen. Modern refined gentlemen wouldn't be caught dead participating in the common plebian activity such as closing a car door with brutish force....now would we now?
All right now that educating moment is over...........back to my Grey Poupon. Seriously though, I like not having to bang the door closed. I'm used to it now. And mostly don't forget anymore.....lol I like it. |

I think soft close doors were more useful with older cars with very heavy doors.

Since the coupe has frame-less doors, it's very easy to 'slam' the door closed, since there's no resistance to closing, like with a framed door. So I welcome that feature. Ha ha. Didn't see it on the options, so guess it's standard on the M850i. And also learned the DHP (RAS) is standard too.

Looking at the configurator of bmw , I noticed that the m850i will not come with soft close doors unless you opt for the heated nd vented seats. Comfort pack? May be the uk spec cars differ than the US market ones

On the configurator, it doesn't say anywhere that the M850i has soft-close doors. I hope they do, since I'd order it with every option except C/F stuff (not a fan). Austin has both M550i and M850i now, so hope they still have both when I go in a couple of weeks. I see no chance to find a '23 M550i like I want (can't order one anymore), so most likely will order a '24 M850i.

Hey, that clearly is a 4-door car, so the 'Gran Coupe'. I should have specified COUPE. But I was able to find the 850 does have soft-close doors. No power rear sunshade, unfortunately. Or even a moon-roof now, but I prefer it without one, so that's fine with me.

Soft close doors are standard on the 8 series and can be found on the configurator via the summary page of a build and selecting "view standard features". That said our UK brethren mileage may vary as BMW has unique option packages in their market.

For my M850i coupe I literally use the function every time I drive the car. I could definitely live without it but for the coupes heavy long doors it's a total value add. |

I went out and experimented some. I have trouble closing the door gentle enough to get the soft close mechanism to work. It's actually more work to close it that gently than to just close it normal.

The doors close so easily on these cars the soft close very rarely kicks in, making it a useless option, as you have to deliberately soft close the door to get it to engage. It would be a much better feature if there was some kind of anti-slam device that cushioned the door no matter how hard you closed it, and then kicked in the soft close feature.

Actually, I think you might find these safer. The auto close does not engage until the door is tightly closed. A finger would be enough to stop it. Additionally, because you close the door more slowly and softly, there is about a zero chance of catching a little ones (or an adults) fingers in the door. I find this feature most useful when I am opening and closing the doors for a lady (valets in the know will always soft close) at no time do you ever have to “slam” a door on someone and softly closing it guarantees it will close completely and not need a hip bump to latch. This is often called “executive close” as it’s not necessarily designed for the person closing the doors from inside the car but for the protection and comfort of those inside the car when someone else is closing the door for them. |
