8 Series tyre Wear
I have a BMW 840d and like many of the posts on this site i have experienced serious issues with tyres. The car was originally fitted with Bridgestone S007’s which ran down to minimums at 8000 miles. Like many i complained to BMW who did offer to make a contribution to the replacement of the tyres and also did a full geometry analysis (FOC) . The car was found to be aligned and no issue / fault was identified. The next set of Bridgestones did no better than the first and i was forced to change the tyres after another 6500 miles. At this time I decided to switch to Michelin Super Sport Tyres which certainly felt different as soon as they were fitted. I have now done just under 6000 miles on this latest set and the rears seem to have around 6mm of tread left which if the wear rate continues at this level should mean they are god for 15-16k. However the fronts that had done better than the rears on the Bridgestones and not fairing so well on the Michelin’s. The inside tread blocks are down to 4.8m which suggests they will run out around 9-10k and there are signs of feathering on the edges. Definitely the Michelins are better but wear is still a big issue. This is a real shame as the car is superb but the tyre wear certainly spoils the overall satisfaction

840d tyre wear
Hi All,
Thank you all for sharing your experiences regarding this issue. It is something I am also a victim of. Is anyone else currently in an open dialogue with BMW regarding this issue? Thanks in advance Colin |

Hello, I am late joining this thread. I’m running a 840D x-drive on 20” rims, with BMW OEM fit Michelins all-round. Whilst washing the car at the weekend I cleaned the wheels and checked the tyres, all good, lots of tread 5+mm all round. But I ran my hand round the back of the tyre (inner sidewall) and cut my hand on the exposed steel braids poking through! Wheel alignment and geometry is to spec, so looks like there is a design issue in how BMW have set-up the suspension. Are there any more threads on this topic and have BMW admitted a fault or compensated for replacement tyres ? Seems ridiculous to throw away tyres that are still part-worn, and dangerous that the damage to the sidewall is unseen by the driver.

So my M850 came with ZTK pkg and amongst other things comes with Mich Pilot SS's. The car has an easy driven 3k with the rears at 9/32 but the front are 5/32 yet worn perfectly evenly…tech thinks it was due to under inflation but then why do the rears have nearly 2xs as much tread? The car is front heavy but twice as much wear? Wasn't planning on it, but after reading this thread should I bitch to bmw?

Well mine failed its MOT after three years old I got 12000 miles out of the original bridgestones on the rear ( the fronts were all changed several times due to pot holes ) having still got 2.5mm + on the tyres I thought they were ok... but not so .. I was driving a death trap un be knowns to me,.. the insides had gone beyond the steel which I couldn't see. They were close to blowing out.
The wear across the rest of the tyre looked even enough so initially I had no concerns. A year previously I had the geometry checked at an Arnold Clark Garage in scotland because of frontal pot hole collisions with no real concerns shown after the check. I used to have this problem with X5's having inner tyre wear as well but stupidly I thought this car would be different. I recommend drivers of this type of car to get underneath it and eye ball your rear tyres ! Regularly |

The posters on this thread seem to be mostly UK. My last 2 650’s would wear the rears prematurely on the inside. I had the shop adjust toe to the minimum as I don’t race. That helped greatly.
Is this problem prevalent in the 2023’s or has this been addressed by BMW?

Basically same thing happened to me with roughly 10,500 miles on the P Zeros that came with my M850i. Front tires were down to about 2mm and showing core on the inside edge so was clueless as hadn't check as outside edge was fine. Driving a death trap for sure. SA basically chocked it up to the camber and said nothing was out of spec.

2021 840D Gran Coupe
Front n/s tyre warning alert then within 1/2 mile pressure dropped to Zero while driving, when both front tyres removed the inside edges had completely worn to the canvas and P zeros tread was delaminated. Vehicle owned from new 15k miles, BMW Sytner deciding if going to cover Ł100 cost for full alignment check and returning tyres to Pirelli for inspection.
So far not much help from dealer trying to say normal - don’t think so! 5mm tread depth across tyre, but inside edge (about 25mm) worn down to canvas causing complete pressure loss. If you have an 8 series worth checking tyre wear inner edge as serious safety issue in my opinion - pursuing BMW for investigation and compensation. |

I totally agree we need to inspect tires for inner wear and be ready to order replacement. Mine came with Pzero and I definitely will not use them again. |

Beware the S007…
I missed this tread (searching “tire” instead of “tyre”), but I do want to add my own personal experience and warning… on my M850i, a front S007 had corded on the far inner shoulder with less than 9k miles. Treadwear indicators are useless, as this failure occurs way out at the sidewall edge. Like a previous poster, I felt the inner edges on my fronts with my bare hands and was rewarded with a few torn steel belt abrasions.
I believe the S007 in OEM sizes (and alignment) is a dangerously insufficient tire for the 8 series. Rich |

That looks like a tire problem for sure.
