Hello,
I’ve just pulled the trigger and bought a 6 months old G15 in Sonic blue, super excited, first time BMW ownership for me! The car is being delivered Friday, personally I’m not keen on the stop start function, on my old car, “Jaguar F type coupe” removal of the stop start was easy, it consisted of simply removing a small back up battery located in the boot.
Question: Can the stop start be disabled on my 8 series?

Hi, and congrats.

Yes, it can be disabled (always default to OFF upon start-up) through coding.

And it can be disabled manually and temporarily by pressing a button near the ignition, though that is an annoying hassle.

Also, if you drive in Sport or Sport Plus, auto start-stop will be disabled automatically. Of course, you have to press a button for that, too.

So, coding is the best way to go.

I’ve just googled Coding for BMW, there’s quite a variation of garages Offering this service, do you know what the correct software they should be using? Is it a specialists job? When I book it in for coding, would you recommend I get anything else done...

Start/Stop function has an on/off switch next to the ignition button. The car should remember the setting that you select, so if you turn it off it should stay off.

Nope. It does not stay off between start-ups, at least not in the U.S. I suppose it may be different in the U.K. or elsewhere. If so, the problem is solved right there.

As for coding, it’s best left to an expert. Poke around the board. I think there’s a forum where you can post a search for someone in the U.K. who can do it locally or remotely over the web. I found that the 850 didn’t really need any other adjustments (other than re-enabling the glare-free brights for U.S. use). Most other adjustments are user controlled through iDrive 7.

Really? That sucks! My '18 M3 CS defaults to the last setting.

The dealership might be able to disable it.

Yeah, BMW used to allow U.S. dealerships to make one change to that system, but the policy was changed. I suppose a cooperative dealership service advisor and tech could quietly do it, but it would be a one-off.
