One thing I've learned is that it is almost always better in person! Pics never do anything justice.

Total CGI! Even on the "official" press release page. That's why the front window is completely blacked out in all the photos. Not to mention the lighting is not quite right in some of the photos.

I was wondering about the black windshield. They may have done that because the interior is not setup yet?

Personally i think that is wicked!!!! its got to have a worked M5 engine in the back surely?

550bhp and 1.5 ton, come on BMW back to basics, just like the 1er!!!

*knows its probably going to be way over 1.5tonnes! oh well we can dream!

I'll file this in the "I'll believe it when I see it" file. Wouldn't surprise me that BMW would want to produce a supercar to rival Ferrari, Lambo and the R8. And reviving the M1 would be the way to market it.

Pics look nice. I think it would kick @ss...

Official Press Release

This is the official press release.

It goes on for a while, this is the first couple paragraphs, I attached the pdf if anyone wants the read the whole thing.

Heritage as Inspiration: BMW M1 Hommage.
04/27/2008
Design tribute to the BMW M1 celebrates its world premiere at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2008.

Munich/Cernobbio. To mark the 30th anniversary of the BMW M1 super sports car, BMW Group Design is presenting a homage to this legendary model as part of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2008. The BMW M1 designed by Giorgio Giugiaro was a car of superlatives and a highly emotive vehicle that was uncompromisingly primed for the race track. Spawning this development was the BMW Turbo by Paul Bracq, a revolutionary concept car which, in addition to its groundbreaking functional design, also boasted a raft of technical innovations. It is from these two unique vehicles that the BMW M1 Homage takes its cue – a design study that pays tribute to its forerunner models and an embodiment of the competence, creativity and potential of the BMW Group Design team.

“For BMW, heritage is always also a living heritage. Drawing inspiration from your own past and thereby reinventing yourself – that is exactly what the BMW M1 Homage demonstrates in impressive style.”
Dr Klaus Draeger, BMW Group Board Member, Development

A particular forte of BMW Group Design is to draw on its own powerful history and actively feed this into the design of the future. The BMW M1 Homage is a design study in the tradition of a BMW Turbo that represents a contemporary take on the BMW M1 and the mid-engine concept. This tribute exhibits an emotional design that showcases technology and integrates it into the overall aesthetics of the vehicle.

I really think it is a piece of art. Bringing back one of the most advanced cars of its time back from the dead. I hope they produce it!

Best,

M

Those pictures are all of a rendered model photoshopped into a real picture.

That car does not exist outside of a computer. Not yet atleast.

The July issue of CAR magazine features an exclusive interview with BMW board member Herbert Diess in which the exec reveals that the M1 Hommage concept is destined for production. Diess says, "We have the know-how, we have the right engine, we even have the infrastructure to build such a car," but CAR doesn't divulge too many secrets online (they are, after all, in the business of selling dead trees). The Brit pub gives up a few teasers about the mid-engine supercar, namely that it won't be called the M1, BMW's plan to fit "heron-wing" doors and a powertrain line-up that will include three engine choices. On that last bit, we'd suspect that the twin-turbo'd 3.0-liter engine would be a suitable entry-level mill, followed by the M3's V8 and the M5/M6's V10, with the latter benefiting from a duo of turbochargers. It's all speculation at this point, so we'll have to wait for the July issue to hit UK newsstands tomorrow, with sales in the U.S. beginning later this week.
