8 series 90c thermostat

After paying for 4 hours of labor plus radiator flush service, it turns out that the n63 designated 90c thermostat doesn't fit our engines. That'll apply to lci m550 and m850 engines.

I shot the shot and it was a miss. So much for taking YouTube advice 😆

This should be concerning for any n63tu3 owner as the thermostat is a 105c unit. This is higher than current s63 motors which means the engine will run the same fate as previous generations.

Has anyone come across a solution for this?

Just a side thought, the ECU has the engine run more rich to get to temp slightly quicker due to more cylinder pressures. With the modern cars I've always had to program the ECU for the new target temp when putting in lower temp thermostats. I have not seen one for the new S63 but in AZ my engine stays around the 210 mark which would lean more towards a 90c anyway.

Current s63 supports the model 90c thermostat I have. It fits most of the full M cars and prior n63.

The m850 and 550 including the b8 alpina run at 105C and use a totally diff thermostat device, which is crazy high temps. I foresee issues with these cars beyond 60k or 70k miles just like prior gens.

OH so you are saying the S version already has the 90c? That would make sense since my car reads just about 210 on my hot days and if I'm moving I have seen slightly lower...

Crap, so the new V8s have a 221F thermostat? That's crazy high. Even the 194 is high enough already. Does the '24 I-6 840 have the 194 or 221 thermostat? Thx.

I'm not sure what the factory is on m8 or m5, but the m5 and likely the m8 among other M cars, have the ability to put in a 90c thermostat. Not all thermostat are created equal though so be cautious which one you look to buy.

Can you share the url of the thermostat that actually fits M8?

I bought a thermostat for a 90C R&D, via Bavlogic so we'll see if the 8 and 7 and 5 series using the n63 will have a solution soon.

I believed they fixed in newer models but in older….however i’m going by what i’ve read in some posts.

I have no prior knowledge of the overheating issue mentioned in this thread…but surely changing the thermostat is only going to make a very marginal difference in a very small time frame of the heating/cooling cycle??

Evens Waterless Coolant MAY be a more beneficial change?? although addressing the underlying cause is always going to be priority.

Related question: Do BMWs have just a physical thermostat, or an electronic system, like Porsches, which in normal mode, it also keeps the temperature to the roof? That's why I always used sport mode on mine. If the BMW system is also electronic, maybe sport mode helps too. Just curious.

Should help during daily driving, in traffic and such. It's like holding your breath then finally getting a chance to get air but then having to hold your breath for a shorter period with the lower thermostat. If that makes sense.

I really can’t see it…but I am no expert!!

Hope you get the issue resolved….my old Honda Blackbird Fi had overheating problems in really hot weather in heavy London rush hour traffic…was never able to get to the bottom of that despite the cooling system appearing to be in fine fettle. Often considered trying the Evans Waterless Coolant but never got round to it.
