CSL is already BMW M's lucky, iconic and well-established top-of-the-line monicker. So they are far better off cementing the M Sport < M Performance < M High Performance < M Competition < M CS < M CSL scheme on the market and in the public's mind and applying it consistently across the whole lineup like a numerical sequence - even though end results will inevitably vary and be more or less reverent to the original CSL ethos depending on the segment - than just reserving the CSL badge to whatever will exactly correspond to the ideal CSL formula... i.e. about zero models given the weight gain across the board.

A similar badge mixing and watering down has occurred with the regular models' series numbers: while ideally a 2er should be a coupé 1er, a 6er should be a coupé 5er and an 8er should be a coupé 7er, the 2er range now also comprises a FWD minivan and a FWD Gran Coupé which isn't the 4 door version of the Coupé, the 6er range has comprised an esthetically questionable - certainly not sporty - high riding Gran Turismo... They've had a great variety of models to badge and only so many digits available (8 at most realistically), so the ideal nomenclature with iconic, consistent, odd/even series numbers had to give way to a lineup where the numbers are more like vague reference points charted on a scale of vehicle size and pricing, regrouping clusters of oddly dissimilar models because they happen to be at a similar point on that scale (as opposed to, say, Mercedes's richer multi-letter nomenclature or VW's limitless potential of creating new names).

Edit: but since this prototype obviously sounds like an inline-6, it mustn't be the M8 CSL but indeed something special for M GmbH's 50th anniversary...

I did notice that it is an 840i or M850i based on the side venders, front flares, wheel sizes and both bumpers.

I guess if they are making a high powered 48 volt version of the B58 or S58 you'd start with an 840i.

The M8 couple is coming back for 2022. Order and pricing guides have been posted, they're in the US configurator, and there have already been some out for sale (so I assume deliveries):

The M2 isn't 3000 lbs. either. It's about as heavy as an F8X M3/M4, so how does it fit within your perception of worthiness?

It brings new meaning to the term parts bin special. There are clues (both subtle and not) as to what humpty is (and is not).

This car is so big. I drove the comp on the track at the M track days and was like "meh". The M2 Comp was way more fun.

In that case, the thread title and first post need to change.

That's not a M8 CSL; hell it's not even a M8 period.

?? I'm not saying a car has to be 3k pounds to be a CSL. I'm simply making an observation. I'm saying if "any" car in the current lineup should get the CSL badge it's the M2.

The front bumper is obviously not M8. The exhaust didn't sound like a v8. Maybe it's s58 hybrid.

Remove 2 cylinders, AWD and many of the luxo features, it might end up being not so heavy after all

I doubt very much that's an M8 CSL prototype or whatever people are saying. That's simply some development mule imo.
The body it's based on likely means nothing, I'd guess they are using the 8 series because it's huge & they can jam all sorts of development stuff in there. Undoubtedly some type of hybrid tech going on in there too.
Quiet news day ?
