How would you improve (fix) F1??

1- No technological limits on cars (except width & lenght) = Bring back engineering ingenuity. Every team would have different looking cars. The best ideas are sometimes the most unusual.

2- Active aerodynamics (think Veyron under hard-braking) = its the inevitable future, why delay?

3- Cover the wheels (this isnt 1965) - and aero would improve .... and cover the cockpit.

4- Active suspension

5- Develop rain-draining, perforated, rubber-like track surface ..... more grip in the dry ... dry-grip in the rain.

6- Private teams (no corporate giants), cap 2 teams per engine manufacturer.

7- Pay-Per-View options (i want the live timing screen.. and i want the option of flipping between all on-board cameras.

8- 2 teams per tire manufacturer = it be nice to see Pirelli, Yokohama, Michelin, etc all battling it out for supremacy.

Just a few of MY suggestions....
Its 2010 already ... if we cant have flying cars .. lets move ahead with the future of this 100 year old sport.

Unchecked technological limits are what F1 should get away from right now. Active aerodynamics and active suspension have no place in racing. Is it about the drivers or the cars? Level the playing field, and F1 will become more competitive like NASCAR and less like a parade of cars on the tracks as it is now.

If you took away the rules, the racing would be far less competitive than it is now. Tickets would be more costly and speeds would increase dramatically, probably leading to more driver injuries and deaths. At the other end of the spectrum, you have identical spec cars, which isn't exciting from the perspective of an automotive technology enthusiast's viewpoint. The sweet spot lies somewhere in between these two extremes.

The thread title is "how would YOU improve F1" --- not "what do you think of my proposals"

As in - post some ideas - not critique what others post

I would shit in Bernie Ecclestone's mouth until he suffocated.

The rest would sort itself out.

1. A race...or two in North America

2. More manufacturers

3. Reverse the current aerodynamic regulation so the cars look less absurd

4. Greater promotion of the GP2 series, along the lines of Sprint Cup/Nationwide

5. Return to some of the classic tracks: Spa, Silverstone, Nurburgring, Imola etc.

6. Anonymous tire compound choices (no markings), multiple tire manufacturers

7. Three car teams, and single car teams

8. Tobacco sponsorship

9. Turbos

10. Lift the testing ban, but keep it regulated (1 test per round)

11. Give a single point for pole

12. Don't fuck with the qualifying stages...it's fantastic to watch

13. More US television coverage

14. Keep the slicks

1. Get rid of Bernie Ecclestone.
2. Bring back the V-10 engines.
3. Bring back F1 racing to USA.
4. Get rid of refuelling ban.
5. Bring back manual transmission with an actual clutch.
6. No limit on testing.
7. Bring back the technical, engineering, and aerodynamic innovations which makes this series F1, not NASCAR.

Besides tying Bernie to a boulder and shoving it into the ocean...

I'd just reset the rules back to what they were in 2004. F1 was working fine then.

Ok, here's my contribution

1. Lower the fee or whatever extortions FIA is leveling on the networks for broadcast right.

2. Ban tobacco sponsorship, forever. There's no need for blood money.

3. One engine spec: turbo 4 cylinders across the board. Screw those V10, V8. Most race fans don't care what type of engines are run in these cars as long as it's exciting to watch the actions, with the exception of only the Ferrari fans.

4. Unlimited testing.

5. No active anything.

6. Bring back manual tranny and clutch.

7. Encourage more manufacturer participation, of cars and tires.

8. Do whatever else to make F1 cheaper to participate, or MORE manufacturers are going to walk. It just dawns on them that they don't have bust their piggy bank to flash their brand in F1 to sell cars. It's a different time nowadays. Get with it.

The manual clutch thing is hilarious and completely illogical -- have either of you suggesting this driven anything resembling an actual "race car"??

Having driven a modern F1 car = I can assure you - it would be 'impossible'

and we definitely need at least ONE usgp - if not 2 (USGP West) in the capital of car sales

I think that with the new no refueling rules the racing could get better since passing should not happen just in the pit stop. What would be interesting is if they gave everyone a minimum unfueled weight to meet without engine or gas. Then, teams would have to play around with fuel mileage vs. performance. Why does everyone have to be running almost identical engines? Would be interesting to see some turbocharged V6s running against NA V12s. Its clear that weight is a huge factor currently with cars sometimes lapping .2-.5 seconds a lap just because of a drop in the amount of gas on board.

did you just describe LMP 1? The similarities are a bit odd.

Anyway, I would make the proposed NYC GP a reality. Talks between bloomy and the FIA have been going on for years.

Bartman, even if it was an option the manual gearbox is dead in F1. The current paddle shift boxes are far quicker and accurate every single time, unlike even the most skilled std driver.

They will still stop for tires -- but I agree with the engines - may the best engine design win --

F1 has been at the forefront of technological design and ingenuity, since rich guys 1st closed public roads and held
"Grands Prix" in the 1900's.
EVERYTHING (worth talking about) that is in or on a modern car, began life as a "crazy idea" in F1:
- Seatbelts
- Disc Brakes
- ABS
- etc, etc
It is VITAL to the sport AND the technological advancement of consumer car safety and development -- to allow F1 to experiment with radical ideas -

Actually many automotive advancements, including disk brakes and ABS came out of the 24 Hours of LeMans.

Just a few of MY suggestions....
Its 2010 already ... if we cant have flying cars .. lets move ahead with the future of this 100 year old sport.

My list would be:
1. Monday Testing on the same track from the Sunday race
2. Turbo 4 engines since that is where all road cars are going

As for your list, I am sorry but I will have to comment since you claim to have driven an F1 car but seem to know nothing about car racing of any kind

1. No technical limits would mean the team with the most money wins every time, and as others have said it would all be about the machines not the drivers, no one wants that. In addition, the word "Formula" by definition means cars that all match a certain formula or technical regulations
2. They already have adjustable front wings in 2009 and 2010... Does not add anything to the sport or the show
3. Maybe, but we already have Prototype car racing
4.They already tried that in F1 and it was major fail
5. Are you serious? Rain races are the best by far.. even the drivers love to race in the rain, it seperates the men from the boys
6. Okay, but the way things are right now, not enough manufacturers
7. Already available in the UK for years now and in the US on speed.com since last year
8. Major fail, Much better racing when everyone is using the same rubber
