Currently driving a lease car waiting for a new 2019 X5 40i.
I had a similar experience when the 1986 MB 420SEL, which I'd had for five years, was totaled while parked by a cell phone-yakking, probably drunk teenager. She scarred every body panel on the driver's side, including the wheels. The doors still opened and shut; the car drove perfectly. But the insurance company knew that the price to restore the big grey car would be greater than the book value.

That car had been with me all over eastern Colorado and down into New Mexico, up into the mountains and back down here into Da Swamp. I should have bought it back and worked on getting the money together to fix it up. But my finances were weaker then, and 17 mpg on premium fuel was killing me, and I let the big car go. Whenever I see a W126 chassis car to this day, I smile.

I am on the opposite side of the spectrum, AKA the one receiving the vehicle that the owner is sad to see go.

My 2011 E90 had 31k when I picked it up a year ago. Owner had it for 3 years and only put 3,000 miles on it. He was a true car guy, did PPI's for exotics and the whole nine yards. He was sad to see it go. We still text every so often, going to send him a speedometer picture when it rolls 50k in a few weeks.

My 1970 Cutlass S had just rolled 29k when I purchased in it May of last year. I purchased it from the second owner, who had it since 2003. He bought it from the original owner who received it as a graduation present. Sherwood Green on green vinyl, AC, 350 Rocket, TH350, fun little cruiser.

Needless to say they have both received the same amount of TLC if not more than the original owners. Both are in impeccable shape! Great to buy from people who truly cared about what they owned.

Depends on the car. When I sold my Honda Fit, I wasn't that sad to see it go. It was a great car, I just never got that attached.

When I sold my piece of shit 1997 Ford Ranger that I paid $40 for, it got dusty. I still regret selling it. I just didn't have room.

My father came home crying after his blue 1981 320i kicked the bucket back in 1996 with 200,000 plus miles. Car signified a lot of things for him, family (the good and the bad times), success and struggles at work, getting old and life itself. He could have bought twenty of them so it had nothing to do with money. I don't believe this a BMW specific story however many people don't understand it, I do.

Loved that little thing.
I did enjoy getting rid of my Ford Granada, long ago.

Was it pea green? My best friend in high school had a pea green Grenada. He was a year older than me and this was my first friend with a vehicle. That ugly Grenada was freedom to a 15 year old kid! I remember it fondly.

No, silver. I called it the silver lemon. Interestingly enough, it also had an inline 6 like my current car. Damn thing would stall if I made a moderate left hand turn.
