New tyre choices

Just wondering what everyone has chosen? My rear tyres need replacement soon as the inner portion is just about down to the minimum markers - I’m both happy and sad about this as the OEM tyres are Bridgestone Potenza S007 and I HATE them with a passion, but on the flip side the rear tyres are rather pricey.

My car spends 90% of its time on the motorway - I don’t drive it hard at all around corners etc, so I’m not bothered at all by having the best high performance tyres! My biggest goal is comfort really, but still having a decent tyre (not run-flats).

I’ve narrowed it down to either Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 3 or the new Falken Azenis FK520 - both of which get very positive reviews in the big tests. Has anyone got any experience of either? I’ve had Hankook in the past and been extremely impressed with them so I’m swaying towards them.

The fronts are down to 3mm too so I’m tempted just to get them all done at once.

BMW has worked with manufacturers to created specific compounds for BMW autos. They are designated with a star on the sidewalls. Michelin makes them for sure. Have you looked at these tires?

I don’t drive at all on the limit like I say - normal tyres will absolutely suffice as long as they are the correct speed and load rating. Only non run flat * marked tyre choice is the Potenza S007 and they are one of the worst tyres I have ever had.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S* are made for BMWs - they are better in certain situations like cornering. But it is always a tradeoff as it seems.
Here is a video comparing them to the non *

Thanks - I’ve seen this. Again it’s focused on M cars on a track, which my 840i will go nowhere near. It spends the majority of its life sat at 70 something MPH going up and down the A1.

I sold my set after putting them on the X3.... lol Way better all around than worrying about swapping. But I also don't tread through deep snow just up to go skiing couple times a year.

Sorry, my point was not well presented My point was: You could get the non star and be happy - they are cheaper and work well enough for non track use.

I was talking with the Michelin rep at the BMW MiX event a few weeks ago at the PC and discussing winter options. New wheels and tired, just different tires, etc. In the end the answer sound like I get the pilot sport 4 all season and just leave them on the car permanently. I'm not tracking my car and for just a normal DD I'm not likely to tell much of a difference. So that's my plan come this winter.

What kind of temperature the area you live in ?
If dry and got , Pirelli Pzero are great for grip , they work well in hot climates but no grip in cold and wet . IMO as much as I like Pzero , Ps4s is a good al rounder.

Was going to throw in the Pzeros are a great option but here in the Phoenix area it's all hot climate driving. They did well when the wife and I took a road trip to the White Mountain area last summer and it was almost non-stop rain for 4 of the 7 days. The Pzeros still held up well but obviously I took the climate conditions into play and adjusted accordingly.

Yeah Mr live in my land of the dry and hot climate. 😜 To your point if one has a SUV that sees the light of day up in Sunrise, Snowbowl, or heck let's drive to Telluride it's better to have a single set of tires that can handle it all vs swapping. 👍

I've probably heard 1000 stories of pirellis and blowouts. They bubble easy too.

Problem is P-Zeros (at least ones available in the UK) are run-flats and I don’t want run-flats. I had them on my G15 and actually found them to be ok for run-flats and didn’t have any sidewall bubbling issues despite smacking a couple of pot holes!

I’ve found a great price on the Hankooks anyway so that’s what I’ll be going for - literally anything is going to be better than the Bridgestone Potenza S007…hateful things they are!

Thanks all for the inputs.

BMW didn't think the 4S' were all that, cos they gave me Pirellis on my new M8

You don't use a dedicated winter tire in Ohio? I thought you have some ugly winter weather there?
Because an all season doesn't compare to a really good winter tire in winter conditions. They are a compromise. No problem if all you get is an occasional light snow that is gone pretty fast.
There's a time and place for all seasons, but real winter is not it!
My Saab's AWD with Michelin X-ICE tires can run rings round any all season tire.
The 8 stays safely sleeping in a nice indoor garage all winter

There are a few days of bad snow each winter, but overall usually not too bad. And when it snows I drive my X3, which admittedly also has the all seasons from BMW. There were so many sub 45 degree dry days last winter I wanted to drive the 8, but couldn't because of the summer tires. I just want to be able to drive the 8 in the colder weather instead of letting it sit in the garage from November to April.
