I like my M8 but I really liked my M5. I feel the M5 was faster and I don’t feel the M8 is really that much more luxurious. Note that I have literally every option except carbon ceramics on my M8, too (including carbon buckets).

Yes, it looks better than the M5 but the LCI is a great looking M5.

I’d pick a M5 over the 850 all day long. It wouldn’t even be particularly close.

Totally get you on the v8, especially a BMW one. S55/S58 engines/exhausts just sound terrible. I dont know why BMW makes the M cars sound worse than their M sport couunterparts.

Here's a video of my M5C. Honestly, while it was fun in the beginning, out of all the more performance oriented cars I've owned the novelty wore off the fastest with the M5. I'd even pick the M2C as the more fun car. My Alfa Giulia QV was by far the best driving/fastest car I've owned.

^ I’m weighing an M5, an X3M, or keeping my M850i. Right now keeping the M850i seems to be winning.

In my video I go into it more, but I just can’t give up such a beautiful car so easily!

Just to be clear, the low trade in value of my M850i is partly what dashed my hopes of trading “up” to one of the S63 cars.

While my wife said she’s ok with it, I don’t feel right spending that much money. I could instead stockpile more money and eventually get a supercar replacement for the R8 instead. That would be far more of a game changer (although I have to admit, the R8 with an exhaust is quite an epic car and I may struggle to part with it as well…)

Have you considered tuning?

For less of the price of your negative equity/lowball offer, you can make your car faster than the M5 and make it sound much better while still retaining a more comfortable car.

Cary Jordan offers proven E85 tunes that make 650whp on the stock system. Add a nice intake and exhaust and your car will not only be faster and sound nicer, but also look much better than an M5.

Speaking from someone who keeps changing their cars, the grass is not always greener on the other side. If you trade your car in for essentially something that most people can't tell apart from a 530i, you will miss a lot of the 8 series presence.

Not to mention that the new M5 is coming out in not too distant future so you will be taking a much bigger hit after you've owned it for a year. ANNDDDDD you have an R8 already, so you probably shouldn't even have an itch for a 4 door sedan next to that

Good luck tuning a '22 model BMW, though. Has anyone figured out how to crack the ECU? I'll be damned if I'm taking my ECU out and shopping it overseas. No thanks!

What are your thoughts on the X3M? It’s an interesting value prop since it’s the cheapest S58 car out there.

Oh, that's right. Forgot those are still locked. I wouldn't ship the DMEs overseas either! Imagine getting them lost at customs!

I'm thinking of test driving the X3M.

But it's not faster than the M850i according to what I've seen online.

oh then your beloved 8 cylinder desire is dead ...

I have both right now the S58 is badass ... been saying it but not everyone wants it due to the exhaust note.

Looking forward to your review on the X3M. I test drove a brand new one off the showroom floor. It was a nice car, but it’s a real M car so the ride was on the stiffer side. In fact, the driver’s side door rattled a bit which surprised me. Performance-wise, I think it’s similar to the M850i GC. The aftermarket for the S58 is also huge.

^ Yeah, it’s the aftermarket that interests me.

Sound, to be particular.

I’m really not that interested in trying to go faster. I enjoyed tuning my Porsche but just going faster does little for me. You can do that in a Tesla these days. But give me a great sounding exhaust/engine and I never stop smiling!

Why not just get an M8? M5 seems a boxy fugly car.

The S58 isn’t going to sound better than your M850. Or it’ll just sound raspier. Why not just change out your exhaust on the M850?

Or trade for the version of M850 that is ideal for you.

Agree here. I wouldn't consider the M5 an upgrade per se (if you consider everything) and if you want sound I would stay away from the S58.

I also vote M8 or maybe try another brand if you want all the boxes checked?
