What more do you get with the M850 vs 840?
As the title asks...
As you may have seen from my other thread I'm looking to move from an M4 up to an 8. I specced out an 840 M Sport and M850 with the same options. Other than obviously the engine and it looks like a rear spoiler and front lower lip, what else do I get for the extra $18,000? I know the 850 comes with more options standard, but selecting the same color, wheels, leather, interior trim, B&W radio, seating, shadowline, and getting the 840 "up to" the 850 standard options etc are there any other differences for the extra money? I don't care about Xdrive. I have a Jeep for winter and the car will never see the track. I would of course love the V8. I'm just trying to see if I can justify spending that much more money on it. Using the generic BMW payment calculator, the 850 is about $300 more/month on a 10k lease. I'm hoping to go drive some this weekend. Thanks for all the input.

Can you share what build you're doing on the 840i? I've tried to match it and can't get to the price shown with a match for the standard M850i features (which should include 20" wheels but that just whacks out my attempt even more). I should note that I included the full boat for Drivers Assistance as in either direction you absolutely want that.

I have an 850i and have not driven the 840i. But previously I had a 2017 750i and had some 740i loaners with the 6 cylinder.
Big difference in power and driving experience just on the engine alone..... The V8 is a joy. |

My last inquiry aside I think you need to start with a 840i Xdrive. I get it where you are coming from as when I ordered my wife's 2017 X5 I chose Sdrive as it is all that is needed especially considering here in Phoenix snow is not a factor whatsoever. I'm not sure if the 2017 X5 Xdrive included active rear wheel steering or not but it's part of the M850i and would assume so for the M840i Xdrive. The key being it is a godsend when navigating tight cornering, e.g., your local Starbucks drive thru and dozens of other applications including a U-turn on a two way road is a breeze. Plus, it's fantastic on "spirited drives" as well.

the biggest difference in the 850 has the adaptive handling system. look at the 550 series dyamic handling [$3500] pak. it lets the car ride like a lux car but turns like a sports car. i have a 640 conv and the m850 drives circles around the 640, not counting power. the 640 gets 26 mpg and the 850 gets 25.5 on open freeway at 80. for a little difference get the 850

Believe me, it's not for lack of desire that I wouldn't get it. I'll have to see what the payments come out to when I finally officially get down to the numbers. I'm already jumping $20,000 in price for my current car. Jumping $38,000 is a big step. Maybe the lease numbers will work out favorably though when I get down to it.

If you were 435i content in 2014, you'll probably be 840i content now.

Why get the m8 over the M850i? Why get the m8 comp over the m8? Why get the m4 or m5?
It's all subjective. Pick something and move along. If you have to ask, you can't afford the m8. If you're having doubts or second thoughts, you don't need a v8. |

Granted this advice comes from a traditional buy and hold car buyer (the sports sedan the M850i replaced was 13 years old). That said I too like shiny new objects but I've primarily invested in a different vice that comes along with a 30% depreciation for some purchases but that is squelched by the value gain of the others. The M850i is my first foray into the leasing world and it will likely be my last. I'll either buy it out or do another traditional buy and hold purchase on a car I know will take me through a minimum of 8-years of trouble free driving. That may have been true in 2014 but based on the OPs sig he's been in a M4 since 2017. Going to an 840i and being "content" is likely not the operative word. I made a huge leap to the M850i and when it's lease is up my decision will be a tough one in regards to buying it out (the residual will be a joke to current market value) or looking for an alternative. Any alternative will not be a lease but buy and hold given where I'm at in life (I'm semi retired and looking to fully retire in 2 years). The buy and hold parameter will likely mean an alternative to a BMW given the overall long-term maintenance cost factor regardless of the abysmal depreciation. Not looking forward to that day but rather enjoying the M850i until the lease runs out.

Why are you stuck with the 2014 status of the OP? He just bought out a 2018 M4 lease. A M235i is apples to oranges in comparison and hence the advice IMO he might want to sit tight with the M4 and see how the next year plays out in the 8 series. If one was to gauge my 2020 M850i purchase in comparison to the car it replaced (2006 purchase) I'd obviously not own the M850i.

Um, thanks for the help. No, I don't think I can afford a 150k car unless there was some amazing deal on it. And now that it doesn't come in a coupe it wouldn't make the list anyway unless I got a use one. I'm here trying to gather some info so I CAN pick something.

What read are you getting? I briefly looked at the 2's including the M2. Great cars and a blast to drive, but not enough tech for me.
