To me it looks like the size of the front and rear lights are just too small for it's body size, whereas it fits nicely on all of the other smaller models.
That's exactly how I feel about the lights as well. They have a weird shape, the new 3 dot design just looks awkward and the taillaights super generic. Would've loved something similar to the old S-Coupe, that looked really nice.

I think the design elements of the front fascia look good on the S, the big "air intakes" at the sides with the double slats, the chrome trim going all around the bottom compliments the design as well imo. Personally, I would make the air intakes bigger vertically, there is too much open space between those and the headlights.

Hyundai/Genesis is South Korean not Japanese

I think the fact that it looks just like a Genesis sedan hurts it a little in the fact that it doesn't stand out at least exterior-wise.

The S-Class has always been more of a car for the driven (preferably Chauffeur driven) rather than the driver. They don't need people staring, so a generic exterior is fine, but the interior should be luxurious and top notch, especially for the passengers, and that's been accomplished for the W223. Mercedes probably knows this demographic more than most others.

I still hate the integration of the screen, but otherwise this car is an absolute home run inside and out. Beautifully done. The current 7-series was already behind the W222 the moment it hit showrooms, now it's no contest.

BMW needs to go back to the drawing board with the 7-series and attempt to design a truly beautiful car inside and out. In my opinion the last 7-series to do it right was the E65 LCI. It looked low, wide, and stately whereas the two generations since look like whales. The current 7-series interior design is lame as well, there's nothing distinctive or special about it. However this Merc interior screen is controversial, so BMW has an opportunity to integrate their tech better.

Agree, the E65 LCI was the last 7er I truly liked, I still like the E38 more but I do miss the bangle era where each BMW sedan at the time at least looked different from one another and had their own distinctive character.

Merc will also be releasing the EQS Flagship EV soon as well so it will be interesting to see if any S-Class owners may convert, as well as how BMW's i7 (which will not be using a pure BEV platform) will compete.

exactly - one of MBs strengths was making their body designs look special. There's nothing special here about the front or the back and it even looks deliberately undistinctive

Now that someone pointed it out, my OCD can't get past the center screen not being centered on the air vents:

The new S-Class design nailed it...or did they? Déjà vu.

I always knew MB design wanted to look like a mid 90’s Lincoln.
Once you see it, you will never unsee it again.

History has a way of repeating itself, even if the automotive designers did not intend to do so.

Marginal redesign at best.

Those front and rear lights are Audi, the lower front is BMW 3 series, and the grille reminds me of a Caddy.

New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Includes S580e Plug-In Hybrid With 510 HP

https://www.carscoops.com/2020/09/ne...d-with-510-hp/

Quote:
This week, Mercedes-Benz took the covers off the latest-generation 2021 S-Class and in the process, detailed a plethora of variants that will be offered. In Europe, these include diesel S450, S500, S350d, S350d 4Matic and S400d 4Matic models, including petrol S450 and S500 models.

One variant not discussed so much detail is the Mercedes-Benz S580e, a plug-in hybrid model that will be sold in European markets. A North American debut isn’t on the table yet, with a Mercedes USA spokesperson telling CNET that the company hasn’t “communicated anything regarding S-Class plug-in hybrids variants for the US at this time.”

Driving this model is the same turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine fitted on the S500 but it now operates alongside a gearbox-mounted electric motor and a 28 kWh battery pack making for a combined 510 hp.

That’s a serious amount of grunt that gives this variant the edge over the mild-hybrid S500 4MATIC that has 429 hp and even the S580 4Matic that will be offered in the United States. The latter features a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system making for a combined 496 hp.

An added advantage of the S580e comes in the form of 62 miles (100 km) over driving on battery power alone, as per the European WLTP test cycle.

It remains unclear if the Mercedes-Benz S580e will be sold anywhere other than Europe but we wouldn’t be shocked to see it sold elsewhere. After all, S-Class customers around the world will likely appreciate the power, fuel efficiency, and all-electric driving range of the S580e.

The first examples of the new Mercedes S-Class are set to hit U.S. shores in the first quarter of 2021. In addition to the aforementioned S580 model with the twin-turbo V8, U.S. customers will also be offered an S500 variant with a turbocharged inline-six rated at 429 hp and 384 lb-ft (521 Nm).

For me the interior console design is a failure due to glued on large center screen and space behind it with small holder. Why? Most likely due to cost cutting if the parts are shared with other models. At this price point they should have integrated the center screen or changed the layout.

Watched the ad for this yesterday. The amount of tech and kit. Woah. I wonder how the 7 will be able to rise to the tech battle.
