M8 Gran Coupe questions

I’ve had my M6 Gran Coupe Competition with a Dinan Stage 1 tune for 4 years now and I’m thinking about trading it for a M8 GC. The 2 questions I have are has anyone switched and from the M6 and found they preferred the older car more and second what are the specific changes on the M8 comp package vs non? It seems on the surface that I would be going backwards in some areas ie. dual clutch to auto, heavier curb weight, less power vs 700hp Diman tune steering hydraulic vs electric and arguably looks inside and out. Thank you in advance for any comments on this.

You will miss that Dual Clutch "bang" during hard shifting for sure, it's just not the same on the M8. However, that M8 will not disappoint, coming from an M6.

I would advise to get the comp pack, just go all the way with it.

I'd say you won't regret it but I never owned an M6, however like xmanpro said you should go with the competition

I was expecting to find the gearbox was a big negative but it was actually ok, not quite as aggressive but not the worst point - the steering was what I didn't like at all, it just felt vague and inaccurate.

The grip off the line was great, if you like to move off from lights quickly then that could steer you in that direction but if you aren't fussed about that I'd find it hard to move

The steering feel and overall driving dynamics seem to be not a step forward. It is the trend in most modern sports cars, more technology and less involvement.

Same can be said of the F10 M5 and F12/13 M6 compared to their predecessors... If you want a sports car with those things I recommend you look at the beauties coming out of Stuttgart.

Excluding non-M thoroughbreds: I've had 3 x F10 M5s, 2 x F06 M6 GCs, an Audi RS7 Performance, a 2019 E63S, an X5M (for good measure) and 2 x F90 M5s. My current M8C GC is singularly the best car I've ever driven. Sure, not everything is equal to or better than its predecessors but I'm not judging it on a door handle or the font used in iDrive or the diameter of the exhaust tips or the lack of a bell-end-shaped shifter or even the fractional difference in upshift time under WOT, rather I'm judging it on the overall package and how it makes me feel-->Elated would be a fair description every single time I drive it.

Performance-wise: lol, no comparison. In the twisties against my M6s, that's a tougher call but the fact that I can't call it speaks volumes.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I’ve taken a similar path with M5’s from E39 to E60 to F10 to then M6 GC and the M6 is my favorite among them all. I’ve driven the current M5CP how would you compare that car to your M8 GC also which interior do you prefer between the 2 GC’S? Thank you

Thanks!

And absolutely. We also have a new development center opening in Atlanta which'll be drivable for me for semi-regular check-ins with my east coast devs.

Apparently the driving dynamics will be improved greatly from the pre-refresh. Problem is the worst time to buy a Panamera is when they are brand new. They're best to buy after sitting because they suffer from the same issue as the 8er so dealers throw huge discounts on them, especially the Sport Turismo's.

My 2020 M5C drove similarly to my M8 but it wasn't as rigid--the M8/M850 are built around a carbon tub or, as BMW call it and slap in writing right on it, carbon core... I could tell the difference almost immediately. Performance-wise and tech-wise, they're comparable.

I liked the physical driver orientation in my M6--you know, the design aspects that clearly tell the front seat passenger, "hands off--that's all mine!"

Some of that exists in the M8 but it's not as pronounced. Quality wise, the M8 is way out in front.

I can't imagine how you'd be disappointed with the performance, the overall package, materials and build quality. Even stock, I'd expect an M8C to outrun a Dinan-tuned M6--the published BMW horsepower and torque numbers are almost achieved at the wheels giving the standard car close to or over 700 crank HP. With a $900 piggyback, I'm hitting 60 in 2.5 seconds and the 1/4 mile in high 10.3x seconds.

It also sounds great even stock--lots of deep burbles. Adding an intake really exposes the turbo whoosh to the world; see here:

M6 interior was awesome, especially if you picked a two-tone color scheme. The sweeping line that goes from the dash to center console really spruced up the design.

Agreed--two tone would've been my choice had I built it.

That interior holds even today--still looks modern to my eye.

That interior looks just like mine except mine is Amaro Brown. I drove a 850i a thought the interior seemed claustrophobic compared to the M6.

Yes, the 8er coupe is a weird package. Less room than a 4-series, no sunroof, and most dealers option a black interior giving it a coffin like feel.

Yes, agree, and I hate it when most cars @dealers lots have black interior If I pay premium, I need more than the Honda Accord interior ... Sorry to the B-interior lovers but it just doesn't do it for me
