Ahh yes, this is also my problem. I used to be on a train for about 25 minutes and could play videogames, watch youtube, or read the internet without ANY bother.

Lol how healthy is that for the strippers and even customers to be breathing in that carbon monoxide while sitting in that tent.

As opposed to smoke-filled strip clubs? Probably about the same.

Huge difference for me sadly I work for Jaguar Land Rover (ikik) as a Product Specialist (pretty much the same exact job as a BMW Genius, except for I don't meet with clients in store, I go to their homes after the purchase)

I've been laid off from there with the promise that I will be rehired as soon as everything goes back to "normal" with no timeline in sight.

I also worked part time at my previous full time job as a Geek Squad Consultation at Best Buy (once a week just to keep my discount). 90% of PT employees were furloughed there too.

Working from home now as a Geek Squad Remote Technician. And I hate it here. Working at Jag Land Rover meant I had complete freedom all day long, I traveled as much as 500 miles a day in cool cars, no managers on my back, and I worked on my own time/schedule. I thrive on being out and about and sitting at a desk all day has never been my thing and its a hard adjustment for me, but I try to spend my breaks and free-time out of the house or moving around as much as possible.

Stay safe and stay sane everyone!

All of the work from home people emailing me and getting me to do their work. Finding info for them, meeting their contractors, entertaining their guests while still having to work 10+ hours a day, taking extra precautions, wearing a mask, sanitizing everything because I'm "essential" i.e. expendable.

The nice thing is not getting a lot of visitors in my office.

An employer can put all the monitoring software they want onto a work computer and many have without you even knowing. I don't care. The difference is my work computer has been supplied by my employer. I won't do it any other way. All the companies I've worked for where I have worked at home has supplied a company laptop. When you're on your work computer, it should be all about work. So there's nothing to hide there. Some companies allow some personal use on company assets but I prefer not to go down that road. I even have two cell phones. One personal and one work.

For me personally, I've gone one step further with my home network. I created an isolated part of my network dedicated for my work laptop and work cell phone to use. Nothing else connects in and no work device can touch anything on my network except my printers and what I have on my DMZ.

For better or worse, I hope it stays like this and more companies adapt to wfh structure. My line of work requires driving across multiple cities a day. I went from 4hr commuting a day to 2hrs. It literally changed the way i allocate my life lol.

+1

I have it installed on every computer in the plant and office aside from the President and HR of course.

Never really had to use it though. We've only had a couple of instances that were notified by the firewall first that required me to go into it further.

Typically just a mention to someone and that's all it takes without having to dig deeper.

If working from home becomes the norm, gasoline might drop to around $0.17 per gallon. Los Angeles will have crystal clear air every day. Road rage related crimes will disappear.

It might be a good thing.

itching to get back to the office for two reasons, one I enjoy driving (duh), and secondly, i get a break from my kids lol, i love them to death but its impossible to get work done with them around. I've ended up working longer days simply because of the constant interruptions. Thankfully I have a great job that allows me a lot of flexibility so its not that big of a deal.

I have a few friends bitching about working from home, and I don't get it. I worked from home for a month and loved every minute of it. I commute an average of 100 miles and 2 hours a day going to client sites for my company.

You have to be able to establish a good work/life balance when working from home. When I worked from home I'd occasionally respond to stuff at night, but it was because I was relaxing with a nice drink, and it was during a pandemic where I couldn't really go anywhere else with everything locked down. After 4pm, I no longer respond to stuff unless urgent (just like normal). My father is really bad about this though, and also being in the technology field he pretty much just works 24/7 now because he has no off switch.

Hate working from home period. Home now because my fiance is sick and I'm pissed about it. Yeah I can technically do everything from home, but makes the job much more difficult. Job entails a lot of communication between our managers. Most are older hence not as tech savvy, so I have to call numerous times a day which makes me annoyed and I feel like I am being annoying. Frustrating haha.

Yeah that seems to be the limiting factor. Super frustrating when someone higher up in management can't even figure out how to log-in to their computer. Some of the schools my company works for have board of ed members that don't even check their e-mail. If you can't check your e-mail and communicate, then sorry you shouldn't be making decisions.

Have you thought these board members are doing this on purpose? If they don't use emails, there's no paper trail and accountability. I've come across a few situations over my career where individuals were avoiding email so no one could pin anything on them and all they had to do was I didn't know or say that.

Nope, some of these people are going on 90 years old. Although I've certainly encountered what you mentioned in other instances.

It might be a good thing.
In the DC area when the lock downs first happened, the news outlets did report a significant improvement in both air and water quality (ie boating was also included in the restrictions). Currently many places are in phase 3 but still not fully open. Many companies are still work from home or modified in office schedules. I have to drive back and forth for my daughter's custody schedule along with the occasional errands. For the life of me, I can't figure out where everyone is going with the current status of the lock downs. All schools in the area are virtual except private schools. Traffic is almost back to how bad it was before the lock downs. One might say it's due to people pent up in their houses going out to various destinations. It's not. All the plates I see on the road are MD, DC, VA, and WV.

This also goes for the Eastern shore beaches. I was there this past weekend with my daughter to take in the last weekend the amusement parks are open. Tons of cars out there. I'll see how things are in a three weeks when I go back out as I have a place out there.

I go to DC often, it's quite busy in downtown and in tourist areas during the day. Not at the pre-lockdown level, of course, but re traffic I think it just speaks of how insufficient the road capacity is, as it gets saturated even at a fraction of "normal" use.

Totally agree. And our illustrious leaders have learned nothing from 9/11 especially on the Maryland side. All they do is endless studies and by the time a plan is formulated, the anti road expansion people would say see any implementation of widening roads won't put a dent on traffic. That's because nothing was done for so many years. Duh. Road management has to be constant and not once in a few years. The bridge situation is also maddening. When light rail or extension of the Metro is brought it, you get lame excuses about it being too expensive. As if it's cheaper to just sit in traffic. The Metro extension on the red line from Shady Grove to Frederick, should have happened years ago. Still nothing. And the MARC train is just a joke.

I honestly prefer to work from the office. The WFH gets boring pretty fast if you live in the city. I work in finance and people are more productive in the office setting. I feel some people are just too distracted (kids, spouses...) and things are getting delayed.

The only benefit is that I did a few long trips this year. I stayed (worked) in Arizona, California and Nevada. Will probably also go to Europe or Colorado and Florida this year as we won't be back in the office till 2021.

I'm actually not so sure re metro extension. The ridership on Silver line has been, to my knowledge, pathetic even pre-covid; nowadays metro is a ghost town pretty much everywhere. But once you build it (and construction costs are indeed huge, just look at the 267 toll hikes), the operating costs are significant and mostly fixed, so I can only imagine the current overall $$$ losses. And in general, the whole concept of riding a metro train for 1+ hour one way is questionable, we're not Japan or Europe or even NYC. Then we have insolvable dilemma of MARC & VRE trains sharing the tracks with cargo trains (and I think cargo have priority), so high speed is a no-go.
