0w20 vs 0w30 oil
My 2020 M8 owner's manual says it uses 0w30 oil.
I have 0w20 oil stocked for my other vehicles' oil changes. Is it safe/OK to use 0w20? Or better to go out & buy 0w30? Thanks, |

0w20 is good for temps -40c (-40f) to 15c (59f). I see you live in Texas, gets pretty hot. 0w40 is good for -40c (-40f) to 40c (104f). I would go with 0w40. It get hot as hell here in Italy as well, I will be going with 0w40 in my M850i.

Is this temp chart supposed to be universal for any car? The reason I ask is that I just bought a 2024 Audi A5 convertible 2.0 four and it has a sticker under the hood that says to use only 0W-20, and the dealer has a chart at the parts counter that says the same thing, and the owner's manual says to only use the oil indicated on the sticker under the hood. So maybe newer technologies have made this chart outdated?

The reason for the low viscosity oil recommendation is fuel economy. Lower viscosity oil gives a better fuel economy. If you live in a hot climate over 100F 0w-20, may get too thin at higher temps. Here in Italy, I run 5w-40.
