In terms of esthetics, the 8er interior does have a classical, sober, understated elegance that hits, I think, a great balance between sporty and classy. But it certainly doesn't live quite up to its full potential as previewed by the 2017 Concept which, though very similar, walked this fine line to perfection with just a few modifications (more slanted and flowing center stack/center console, flush storage compartment, more precious air vents, more cohesive color scheme). The Merc interiors are more baroque and extravagant, bolder but maybe more vulgar on some level, I guess it comes down to personal taste. In terms of objective standards of quality fit and finish and premium feel, all these competitors seem pretty much neck and neck. In terms of ergonomics, I'm so glad BMW hasn't (yet?) succumbed to Audi's aberrant all-digital controls and still preserves the traditional feel of real buttons. The best solution for the future seems to be clean black tactile surfaces with icons only lighting up when ignition is on (a la Porsche), yet with ridges and grooves allowing blind button-like operation (a la BMW), and haptic feedback on every possible control surface. The non-Hofmeister kink reminded me of something else, and I first thought Dodge Charger or Kia Stinger. After a bit it dawned on me that it resembles a Nissan GTR. Not the worst design ever, and on most cars it would be okay, but it's jarring on a BMW.

I saw an 8 series in person in Austin. It was very different seeing it in real life versus pictures I was taken aback. The low sleekness of it vs a 5 or seemingly a 6 was both strange but I maintain it's the best liking BMW of the new design language.
I only wish the GCs weren't so long in comparison to the 8 standard. The same story with the 6 GC. The only thing in my mind that hangs me up is the 5 series price/performance is just better and the 8 is so marked up for seemingly little better performance. That said I prefer the 8. |

I'm always amazed of this pricey cars being transported with ZERO protection.
Nice color on the 8. That roadster though! |

I'd expect MSRP pricing to look something like this:
M850i gran coupe: $105,000 plus options (about $30k over base M550i) M8 gran coupe: $135,000 plus options (about $30k over base M5) BMW is positioning the 8-series as a step-up from the Mercedes CLS in terms of exclusivity and cost. Hence, why the CLS 53 is around $80,000 base, and CLS 63 S is around $110,000 base.

Apart from the huge kink with minuscule spoiler, Asian looking tail lights, the cars sports an ugly plastic diffuser and Escalade-sized fake exhaust tips. Classy dos not come to mind. IMO the Panamera rear-end is a million times better.. Mind you that Porsche can't give the Panamera away. Sales are soft even with the highest discounts Porsche offers on any model... |

I really don't like this new direction. The X4 already looks awful in the D post. Now the 8 in the C posts looks like crap. And next will be the 4GC. What are they thinking!!? |
