M8 Battery Replacement

Brought my 2020 M8 into BMW dealer for service.
Advisor says I need to replace the battery.
Cost $578, plus $29 tax & $37 shop charges = $644 for battery replacement & register.

I asked what kind/model of battery is it?
He just says 860CCA 70AH.

Has anyone replaced their battery with another brand at another store (Walmart, Costco, Autozone, Indy shop, etc...), if so, which one?

Or just pay the dealer to do it?

Thanks,

Garage List
Not sure it helps but basically a 12 volt 70AH (70 amp hours) and a google search outs the prices all over the board for non-BMW. Literally $400 to $800 plus. Then if DYI the battery does need to be "registered" to the car aka iD7. Path of least resistance is definitely your dealer but others may know of 3rd party batteries for cheaper plus an Indie shop.

So from my research that is very very very cheap for a BMW M8 battery. BMW OEM parts says 1399 - $1999 for the Lithium battery. I don't see any other part number for the M8 other than the Lithium one.

Do you know the part number they are using? And do you know if this is just an AGM version to replace the Lithium one? BMW's are great because as along as you pick the write battery specs you can simply program it in no issues. But I'm not sure if anyone here has replaced the actual Lithium one yet. You might be the first.

OE Part Number
61218092860

Right now says part not in stock. https://parts.bmwofstratham.com/p/Bm...218092860.html

Service advisor just updated reply, saying:
"The $578 is the battery part with the labor of removing and installing of old and new battery. part#61-21-5-A40-E29.
$578 for the battery plus taxes and shop charges. It is a AGM battery, it is original BMW part. We do not put after-market parts. We install all BMW parts.
2yrs or unlimited mile warranty whichever comes first.
$36.80 shop charges are for properly disposal of the old battery and programming of new battery to vehicle."
Quick google search shows, this exact same battery may go for $200...

Does all this make sense...?

I just don't know even the link you sent does not say fitment M8 or M5 which are very similar. Unless I skimmed by it on the list. All I know is the part in my M8 Comp is the Lion battery and on the OEM break down exploded view there are only three part numbers none match the one you have. However BMW's will basically accept anything that can be programmed that matches the specs the car demands. I wonder if its an option difference thing as well, maybe you don't have the same options as me, even though the part break down doesn't show any difference. If it was me I would just be asking for the same battery as what is currently in my car. Hey if they are doing the work then hell with it they own what breaks. lol

Here is the battery my car actually has in it. https://www.bmwpartsdirect.com/oem-p...bC12OC1nYXM%3D

I would guess 2020 M8 had AGM battery and at some time later M8 got Lithium

I thought so too maybe but looking up the OEM for a 2020 shows the Lion as well. In reality it doesn't matter which type of battery as long as it meets the specs required, the BMW system will take either when you program it in. Just thought it strange the shop wouldn't give the OP an option at least. Reading about the lithium battery it supposed to have a shelf life of 7-10 years. I would assume BMW might replace that under warranty if it technically has a warranty on it like if you bought one from say Autozone etc.... lol I just find it strange they wouldn't push the 1500$$ lithium but instead offer a very affordable option that isn't currently listed for any M8 or M5.

I'm going to ring up my service advisor tomorrow just to see what his thoughts would be on if my battery died today what do I do.
